Presented by Frank B. Strauss, ‘63

For centuries women have not been able to enjoy equality in most areas of human endeavor – and the area of music is not an exception. The expression ‘glass ceiling’ was coined some years ago to describe the transparent, and often not so transparent, barriers placed before high achieving women. In this presentation, you will be introduced to four extraordinary women, from four musical periods, who put major cracks in the glass. They are Hildegard von Bingen, Elisabeth-Claude Jacquet de la Guerre, Clara Wieck Schumann, and Amy Marcy Cheney Beach. You will hear about their lives and listen to their music.
