For decades, women in science have faced harassment, discrimination and general bias.

Picture a Scientist, a 90-minute documentary, exposes those challenges and chronicles the work of extraordinary women who are fighting for change.

The College’s Geology Club and the Environmental Science, Policy & Engineering Program are sponsoring a screening of the film for three days beginning on Thursday, April 8.

The film features geologist Jane Willenbring of Scripps Institution of Oceanography, analytical chemist Raychelle Burks of American University, and molecular biologist Nancy Hopkins of MIT, and key social scientists working to understand and reduce gender bias in the sciences.

Complex challenges such as the COVID pandemic and climate change are a call to action for scientists to collaborate globally from a multitude of perspectives. “Any impediment to advancing minorities in science is an impediment to science itself,” says Sharon Shattuck, co-director with Ian Cheney.

The film was a 2020 selection in the Tribeca Film Festival and has been praised by media including the Boston Globe, Science, Variety and Salon.
