Men’s expert to share his thoughts in talk at Union

Noted sociologist and author Michael Kimmel will speak Wednesday, Oct. 29, at 7 p.m. in the Nott Memorial.

His talk, “Mars and Venus, or Planet Earth: Women and Men in a New Millennium,” is free and open to the public.

Kimmel is among the leading researchers and writers on men and masculinity. A professor of sociology and gender studies at Stony Brook University, he directs the school’s Center for the Study of Men.

Kimmel has written more than 20 books, including the 2008 bestseller, Guyland: The Perilous World Where Boys Become Men, which investigates young people’s lives based on interviews with more than 400 young men ages 16-26.

As one reviewer noted, “If you’ve ever had a conversation with a teenage boy and wondered what on earth was going on…this book will serve you well.”

A dinner and discussion before his talk will be at 5:30 p.m. in Beuth House. Kimmel will also meet with members of the Sorum Book Club over lunch.

His talk is sponsored by the Office of Minerva Programs and the Sociology Department.
