Union collects three CASE awards

The College has received three Accolades awards from the Council for the Advancement of Secondary Education (CASE) for the 2013-14 academic year.

The Office of Alumni Relations shared silver in the category of Special Events for its first online faculty lecture series featuring Stephen M. Berk, the Henry and Sally Schaffer Professor of Holocaust and Jewish Studies.

Open to alumni at no charge, the series showcased video lectures from Berk’s popular course, “The Holocaust.” In addition to the full class lectures, Berk posted syllabi and suggested readings. The series concluded with a live webinar including discussion and a question-and-answer session with Berk.

The series was overseen by Rhonda Engvold, assistant director of Alumni and Parent Engagement.

In the same category, the College received an honorable mention for the dedication of the Wicker Wellness Center. The program was coordinated by Ashley Tyner, director of Donor Relations and Advancement Events.

The University of Guelph won gold and silver in the category; the University of Maryland collected bronze.

The Department of Communications and Marketing won silver in the category of Excellence in News Writing for a collection of stories on the College's news site. Criteria include staff-written news items intended for the external general news media.

In the past year, the College has been featured in a number of national media outlets, including the Chronicle of Higher Education, New York Times, Washington Post, New Yorker, Wall Street Journal, National Public Radio (NPR), U.S. News and World Report College Guide, and U.S. News and World Report.

Here are the highlights of the judges' comments:

“Engaging writing. Good strategic referencing. Well documented results.”

This marks the third time in four years the department has been honored in this category.

The news team includes Phil Wajda, director of Media Relations, and Christen Gowan, assistant director of Media Relations and Social Media. Contributors include Tina Lincer, associate director of Communications.

McMaster University took gold; the University at Buffalo, bronze.

Union will receive the awards at the CASE conference in Washington, D.C. Feb. 2.
