Volunteer of the Week
Liana Nunziato ’15 is the Kenney Community Center’s volunteer of the week.
Co-founder and president of Union’s chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery Council on Women, Nunziato teaches local middle school students about computer programming. The
mission statement of the organization is “ACM-W supports, celebrates, and advocates internationally for the full engagement of women in all aspects of the computing field,” and it promotes the education of women in computer science fields.
Through ACM-W, Nunziato works with IgniteCS, which is a Google funded collaboration to pair ACM-W college students to mentor and teach middle school students.
“Our hope is to not only teach about robotics, but to encourage more girls to get involved in STEM and for the boys to learn how to be more encouraging in female involvement,” she said.
A computer science and English double major, Nunziato is originally from Ravena, N.Y. and works for USTAR, is the computer science help desk coordinator and an Instructional Technology Fellow with Learning Technologies and Environments. She is also a member of Gamma Phi Beta.
