Campus community honors the life of Martin Luther King, Jr.



The College will be observing Martin Luther King, Jr. Day this year with a whole host of events throughout the week. The campus community will be able to participate in a march, watch a documentary, attend an alumni panel and much more in honor of the civil rights leader. 

Throughout the day on Monday, the Kenney Community Center will host a group of local students to share in the events and engage in dialogue and activities. 

The week’s events are as follows: 

  • Monday, Jan. 18, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Unity Lounge (Reamer 305) – The documentary film, “MLK, The Man and the Dream,” will play on loop in the lounge. The film spans King’s life, legacy and contributions. 
  • 12:45 p.m., in front of Schaffer Library – The campus community will march to honor those who have fought for justice. Brief remarks will be give on King and the Heavenly Voices Gospel Choir will perform. At this time, winter clothing donations will be collected to distribute to those in need the community. 
  • 5 p.m., Nott Memorial – Union Proud!: Then and Now Alumni and Student Panel Presentation – College alumni will share the stage with current students for an intergenerational conversation on social justice, activism, campus climate and student life. Alumni guests include Kofi Opantiri '71, Don Harrell '75, Donald Jones '73 and Greg Freelon ’72. The winter clothing donation drive will continue at this event. 

Thursday, Jan. 21, 12:50 p.m., Unity Lounge – Students who’ve just returned from the Civil Rights Mini-Term will share their photos, stories and reactions of the trip. 

Friday, Jan. 22 and Saturday, Jan. 23 – The Union College Next Step Retreat will give students a forum to develop knowledge and skills be become better change agents, leaders and activists regarding diversity, equality and more. 

The Offices of Diversity and Inclusion and Multicultural Affairs present the week’s events.
