Union to observe Holocaust Remembrance Day

Murray Jaros

On Thursday, May 5, Union College Hillel will observe Yom HaShoah, or Holocaust Memorial Day.

In memory of the six million Jews who were killed and in honor of those who survived, Murray Jaros of Niskayuna, a Holocaust survivor, will speak about his experiences. His talk will begin at 5 p.m. in Reamer Campus Center Auditorium.

Jaros’ family lived in a remote part of Poland that is now part of Belarus. Jaros was only a boy, when Nazi forces infiltrated their village in the summer of 1941. He and his family escaped, and they were on the run, seeking food and shelter at various farms, for several months, until the war ended.

Yom HaShoah has been held as a day of remembrance since 1951, and is recognized by most Jews in the world.
