An article by Christine Henseler, professor of Spanish, was published on The Huffington Post website. “The Rest of Us: The Real Winners and Losers of the Oscars” can be read here

Also, Henseler, along with Yasmine Van Wilt, the Our Share Humanities postdoctoral fellow, are publishing a series of interviews on The Huffington Post with people who are using their skills and training as artists and humanists to improve their communities. You can view the series here.

Tommaso Gazzarri, assistant professor of classics, was awarded a prestigious fellowship from the Loeb Classical Library Foundation at Harvard University. His $35,000 award is the highest level of funding offered by the foundation. Gazzarri will use this fellowship to support his sabbatical leave in the 2017-18 academic year. During the fellowship period, he will complete a monograph titled “The Stylus and the Scalpel: A Theory and Practice of Metaphors in Seneca’s Prose.”

Mark Toher, the Frank Bailey Professor of Classics, published Nicolaus of Damascus: The Life of Augustus and The Autobiography via the Cambridge University Press. The book includes a detailed introduction, translations and historical commentary. Learn more here

An article co-authored by Timothy Stablein, assistant professor of sociology, was recently published in SAGE Research Methods Cases. The piece is titled “Deviance, Stigma and Health Care Interactions: Sampling and Interview Strategies for Exploratory Social Research.”

Rachel Clarey ’18 and Gianluca Avanzato ’18 were named recipients of the Critical Language Scholarship. The program is a fully funded summer overseas language and cultural immersion program by the U.S. Department of State. The goal is to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering critical foreign languages. Clarey will study Chinese and Avanzato will study Urdu.

Works by 10 photography students are included in the 2017 Student Show at The Photo Center in Troy, N.Y.  Hadley Richards ’17 received a cash award for a photo she produced in the Photography 2 class taught by Martin Benjamin, the William D. Williams Professor of Visual Arts. Others selected from Union to participate in the exhibition include Frank Chiarulli ’17, Rachel Clement ’18, Emma Hart ’19, Audrey Hunt ’17, Kevin Jordan ’18, Laura Mueller ’17, Carlos Piedad ’20, Lindsey Sepe ’17 and Ryann Shadick ’19. The exhibition, which continues through March 26, consists of 56 photos chosen from among 110 entries submitted by 34 Capital Region students.
