With a cast of 27 dancers and a range of choreography, this year’s Winter Dance Concert, Breaking Boundaries, explores how dance can surprise, spark a conversation and engage an audience in a shared human experience.

“Students have worked very hard on their pieces this term. A big theme of many of the dances is that we must trust our limitations, take risks and move forward with our aspirations,” said Dance Program Director Miryam Moutillet.

Put on by the Department of Theater and Dance, the concert is one of the highlights of winter term. It will be performed in the Yulman Theater at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, Feb. 28 and March 1-3. There is also a 2 p.m. matinée on Saturday, March 3.

On the program are works by Moutillet and faculty choreographers Laurie Zabele Cawley and Freddy Ramirez. In addition, dance minors Sydney Conner’18, Yixin He ’19, Bianca Mielke ’18, Portia Taylor ’19 and Shannon West ’19 demonstrate their choreographic prowess through numerous pieces.

Helping to define the dancers’ movements and stories are lighting by Robert Bovard and costumes by Brittney Belz, as well as scenic design by Andrew Mannion, who abandons the traditional bare stage for glowing lead cubes.

Tickets are on sale at the Yulman Theater Box Office Monday through Friday, 12:30 p.m.-1:30 p.m. The cost is $7 with a Union ID and $10 for the general public. For more information or reservations, call (518) 388-6545.
