SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – As part of its celebration of Black History Month, Union College will host a wide-ranging conversation, "Growing the Game: Expanding Hockey's Horizons," on Tuesday, February 21, from 7 to 8 p.m.
The webinar-style discussion will be moderated by Union College President David Harris, a strong advocate for making collegiate hockey more inclusive. Union College, the 2014 NCAA Division I national champions in men's hockey, is the only college or university in the country to have two Black coaches on its combined women's and men's hockey staffs.
Panelists will include coaches, administrators and hockey advocates who will discuss the challenges and opportunities facing hockey as it looks to increase its racial diversity and become more inclusive. Panelists:
- Jeff Scott, vice president for community growth and development for the National Hockey League
- Meredith Lang, Founder, Mosaic Hockey Collective
- Guy Logan '90, former Union hockey player and assistant coach, and current member of the Union College Board of Trustees
- Olivia Soares, assistant coach, Union College women's hockey
- Lennie Childs, assistant coach, Union College men's hockey
Panelists will share the challenges they have encountered during their respective hockey journeys, discuss the biggest challenges facing Black players and coaches in hockey today and offer ideas to grow the game at all levels based on their experience.
