Dear Union College Community,
Today we made the difficult announcement that the Union hockey teams will not participate in intercollegiate competition during the 2020-21 season.
As we considered this decision, we were grateful to hear so many impassioned voices around our winter teams’ ability to compete. In the end, we could not find a way forward without compromising the health and safety of our campus community. As regional and national trends in infection rates continue to rise, the competition, travel and exposure of the ice hockey season contradicts our best efforts to protect our campus against the spread of the virus.
As we shared last week, our fall term on campus has been preserved due to the successful efforts of our entire community - including our student-athletes, coaches and staff - to continue training while abiding by the guidance set forth by New York State, the NCAA and our College. These modified athletics activities have presented great challenges to our programs and to our student-athletes, but we are encouraged to see continued dedication to their teams and tremendous resilience in these times of adversity.
Each year, we appreciate the support and spirit of our students, staff, faculty, alumni, families and local community that we see at so many of our sporting events. We look forward to the time we can safely be back together to cheer on our Union teams and we continue to evaluate the prospect of spring sports competition.
