Union Where You Are: Plans for 2020-21

Winter Sports Update

Publication Date

Dear Union College Community,

With today’s announcement that the Liberty League has cancelled league winter competition and championships, we regret to announce that Union has made the very difficult decision to cancel intercollegiate athletics competition for our basketball, swimming & diving, and indoor track & field teams this season. ECAC hockey league members continue to engage in discussions and are aiming for decisions on the upcoming season in mid-November.

Despite exploring many different approaches to competition, the health and safety of our campus community remains our top priority. In addition, the lack of a conference schedule or league championship dramatically reduces opportunities for a meaningful competitive experience for our student-athletes during the winter season.

We have been encouraged by the positive strides made during this fall term and remain hopeful that our community can continue to work together to mitigate the risks of COVID-19 on our campus. We commend the dedication and passion that our student-athletes have shown to their teams during a very unusual fall term, all while balancing their academic pursuits and other extracurricular commitments. While we are encouraged by the progress in the fall, we recognize the many challenges that inherently come with intercollegiate athletics competition under conditions of a global pandemic.

Intercollegiate athletics remains an integral part of many students’ educational experience at Union, and we will work to create a positive athletics experience on campus. As during the fall term, coaches and staff will continue to engage our student-athletes through training, strength and conditioning work, and team-building activities.

We urge all members of our community to stay safe during these challenging times, and we look forward to the time when we can come together to safely cheer on our student-athletes in intercollegiate competition.
