COVID-19 Updates

New Outdoor Masking Guidelines

Publication Date

Dear Union College Community,

On May 17, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced that beginning Wednesday, May 19, New York State will adopt the CDC's "Interim Public Health Recommendations for Fully Vaccinated People" for most business and public settings. As a result, Union College has updated our health and safety protocols.

As of today, community members will no longer be required to wear masks outdoors, regardless of vaccination status. At this time, we will continue to require masking in classes and indoor public spaces for all individuals. As more of our campus community is fully vaccinated, we will be able to relax additional protocols. Fully vaccinated individuals can remove their masks when in a private setting (e.g. office or residence hall room) with other fully vaccinated individuals.

We understand that rules relating to masking have changed quickly based on CDC and New York State guidelines, and that these changes could be confusing for people in our community. We will do our best to keep you informed and let you know how these changes impact the Union community. We have provided additional information online, including scenarios to help you understand when you should wear a mask, double mask and when it is safe to remove your mask.

Please note that athletic events, large gatherings and commencement ceremonies are currently governed by a different set of guidelines. We will keep you updated if there are any changes in those areas.
