Updated Mask Guidance

Dear Union College Community,

As we enter the final month of summer, we are hard at work finalizing plans for a full return to in-person learning on campus in the fall. Based on the recent surge of the Delta variant, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently revised its recommendations for all individuals to wear masks indoors regardless of vaccination status under certain circumstances in geographic areas with substantial or high levels of transmission of COVID-19.

Unfortunately, Schenectady County (69.5 cases per 100,000) and the Capital Region have seen a recent increase in cases and are now deemed by the CDC to have substantial levels of transmission, which is defined as more than 50 new cases per 100,000 persons in the past seven days.

As a result, effective immediately all visitors, and all employees and students who are unvaccinated, are required to wear masks when indoors. All fully vaccinated Union employees and students are strongly encouraged to wear masks indoors while on campus.

Individuals are not required to wear masks indoors when in an office or workspace alone, or in a residence hall room with roommates, or when seated in a designated dining area while eating and/or drinking.

The College also is reviewing its policies on COVID-19 testing, indoor gatherings, travel and visitors in light of the newest developments and will share any updates relating to these policies shortly.

The health and safety of our campus community continues to be our top priority. It is our hope these measures will be temporary. The College continues to make good progress toward our mandate that the campus be fully vaccinated by the start of fall classes. We remain committed to in-person learning in the fall and are optimistic that we will be able to offer our students a robust college experience this academic year.
