Boosters and Testing Reminder

Dear Union College community,

Welcome back and thank you for helping to make possible our return to campus. Here are a few reminders and updates on key COVID-19 related topics:

Proof of a COVID booster vaccination is required of all eligible students and employees by Jan. 16, or within two weeks of becoming eligible. Please see the FAQ section of our COVID-19 website for detailed information about boosters.

To be eligible for a booster, you must be at least two months past a Johnson & Johnson vaccine or five months past the second dose of Moderna or Pfizer. The CDC has indicated it is safe to receive the booster if you have recently had COVID as long as you are not symptomatic.

If you have already received a booster, it is important that you share this information with the College.

  • Students:

    Students must email a copy of their vaccination record to Health Services at Students who cannot show proof of a booster and who are not approved for an exemption will be subject to disciplinary action.

    If your health care provider has advised you that you are not yet eligible for the COVID-19 booster vaccination because of the care received for your positive COVID-19 diagnosis (monoclonal antibody treatment or convalescent plasma), you will need to apply for a temporary medical exemption following the policy and instructions found here. Exemption requests must be received by Jan. 14, 2022.

  • Employees:

    Employees must upload their vaccination record through the emocha app. Instructions on how to use the emocha app can be found at the top of the booster section of our FAQs. If you are having trouble using the app, the FAQs also provide instructions for getting help.

    Employees who are not approved for a medical or religious accommodation and who do not show proof of a booster by Jan. 16, or within two weeks of becoming eligible will be contacted by Human Resources next week and may be subject to disciplinary action.

Test results and schedule

All students must get tested twice this week (Week 2) and next week (Week 3). Faculty and staff who will work completely or mostly on campus this week and/or next week must get tested twice each week.

The second round of testing for this week will be on Thursday, Jan. 13 and Friday, Jan. 14 from 9 a.m. - noon and 1 - 4 p.m. in Old Chapel/Hale House. Please enter through Old Chapel. As a reminder, if you have tested positive for COVID-19, you should not participate in testing on campus for 90 days.

While some of our test results from the last two days are still pending, we wanted to provide you with an update. Our pre-arrival testing requirement resulted in 102 students testing positive off-campus between Jan. 3-9. These cases that were identified prior to returning to campus helped reduce the transmission of COVID-19 in our community. Additionally, these students were able to isolate themselves at home rather than at a local hotel.

In addition to the pre-arrival student positives from Jan. 3-9, our dashboard shows additional results returned between Jan. 1-10 of 76 student positives and 38 employee positives. We believe these early cases present minimal risk to campus. We are also pleased to report that the vast majority of students and employees who have tested positive are asymptomatic or have mild symptoms.
