COVID-19 Updates

Weekly COVID Update - Jan. 28, 2022

Publication Date

Dear Union College Community member:

In keeping with our current communications practices, here is an update on our COVID-19 protocols.

While we don’t yet have all test results for this week, we have so far seen an expected number of COVID-19 cases. Of the 1,789 results we have received, 33 have been positive – 25 students and eight employees – or 1.8 percent of those tested. As a reminder, the testing dashboard is updated each day between 4 and 5 p.m.

We will continue to test weekly for the remainder of the winter term. Testing days will be Tuesdays and Wednesdays and will occur at Old Chapel/Hale House from 9 a.m. – noon and 1 – 4 p.m. each day.

As we have previously shared, employees who have been working remotely this month will be returning to campus starting Feb. 1. If you have been working remotely, you are expected to get tested on-campus next Tuesday or Wednesday and participate in the weekly testing program thereafter.

Contact tracing update

Today is the last day the College will be conducting formal contact tracing and notification of those who have been exposed to COVID-19. This is consistent with actions taken by the Schenectady County Public Health Services based on new health guidance and with many of our peer institutions in the region.

Starting next week, we will be sending a form via email to students who test positive asking them to share information on their close contacts so that we can continue to monitor for possible COVID-19 clusters on campus. All students who test positive also should reach out to their close contacts to notify them of possible exposure. Information on what students should do if they test positive can be found at this link on our COVID web page.

As a reminder, close contacts of COVID-19 positive individuals who are up-to-date on their vaccines (initial doses plus a booster if eligible) do not need to quarantine but should wear a mask around others for five days.

Masks

Surgical masks or N95, KN95 and KF94 masks continue to be required indoors on campus. Cloth masks do not meet our requirements unless they are worn along with a surgical mask. Please remain diligent about wearing your mask in the proper manner and removing it only briefly while eating and drinking. We continue to have a supply of surgical masks at the testing center for those who need them.

Spring break

Spring break will be held as planned and we are currently discussing protocols related to re-entry for the spring term. We will share more information in next week’s message, following a discussion by the COVID-19 advisory group.

As always, the latest information for all issues and questions related to our COVID-19 protocols can be found on our COVID web page.

Sincerely,
