COVID-19 Updates - February 11, 2022

Publication Date

Dear Union College Community Member:

Given the changing guidelines around mask usage that have been implemented by a number of institutions and governmental agencies in the past week, we thought it important to communicate with our community on this issue.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul let the state’s indoor mask mandate expire on Thursday, ending a requirement that businesses ask customers for proof of full vaccination or require masks to be worn. The governor’s decision is in alignment with similar decisions this week by leaders in other states, including New Jersey and California.

At the same time, the level of COVID-19 transmission in Schenectady County remains high, as defined by the CDC. Additionally, the College experienced a noticeable increase in COVID-19 cases among students in this week’s testing. Our results for this week so far revealed 58 positive cases - 54 students and four employees. By comparison, we had 20 positive cases for all of last week. Testing results are updated each afternoon on our COVID-19 dashboard.

As a result, our rules regarding mask usage remain in effect. Surgical masks or N95, KN95 or KF94 medical style masks are required to be worn in public indoor spaces, with the exception of residence halls and while actively eating or drinking.

We realize there is a desire among some in our community to ease these restrictions as another step toward a return to a more normal way of life. We share this desire and also feel the challenges of “mask-fatigue.” Please know we continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation on campus and the larger Capital Region community closely and that this issue will be revisited with our COVID-19 advisory group.

In the meantime, we continue to be appreciative of everyone’s commitment to the health of our Union community and, in particular, with the community’s patience as we navigate what we hope is the tail end of the omicron wave of COVID-19.
