COVID-19 Updates

Spring Term Updates and Reminders

Publication Date

Dear Union College Community Member:

As we return for spring term, we would like to remind all members of the Union community of our testing plan.

Students are expected to test for COVID-19 within 72 hours of their return to campus (PCR and home tests are acceptable). Those within the 90-day testing window for a previous positive result will not need to test.

Students who test positive should upload results to the student health portal. Please upload ONLY positive test results to the student health portal. Do not send test results – positive or negative – to the health center. Students who test positive should not return to campus until their isolation period has concluded.

All community members
All students and employees will be required to test once each of the first two weeks of spring term. Testing will again be held at Old Chapel/Hale House on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m.

Beginning week 3, we will offer two days of voluntary asymptomatic testing each week at Old Chapel/Hale House. Testing will be on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

It is important for anyone with symptoms consistent with COVID-19 to get tested and seek medical attention. Individuals with symptoms consistent with COVID-19 should not return to campus until their symptoms have resolved.

Students should visit the Wicker Wellness Center for an evaluation and possible testing during the weekdays, or take a rapid test or visit an urgent care facility on weekends, if necessary.

Employees with symptoms should not come to campus. They should get tested off campus with a rapid test, at a pharmacy, or through their medical provider. Employees should continue to report positive off-campus test results to Gwen Pulvirent in Human Resources.

Guidance for positive cases
Following guidance from the CDC and Schenectady County Health Services, COVID-19 positive students must isolate off campus for five days and wear a mask around others at all times for another five days after the end of isolation. Similarly, employees should isolate at home for five days and then wear a mask at all times for another five days after their return to campus.

As of now, masks are optional during spring term. As we have throughout the pandemic, we will monitor cases and guidance throughout the term. Mandatory masking could return if conditions change significantly.

Though masks are optional, they may be worn at any time for any reason. We thank you for respecting each person’s choice about masking. N95 masks, the most effective covering, are available at the testing center to any member of the Union community.

We encourage those who have not been vaccinated to wear a mask for their own protection. Masks will be required for students visiting the Wicker Wellness Center.

The College is permitting visitors to campus at this time. Residence halls remain closed to visitors. All visitors are required to have a completed COVID-19 vaccination series or a negative COVID-19 test (test administered within 72 hours of the visit). Masks are optional for visitors. Departments and individuals hosting visitors are responsible for ensuring their guests adhere to these guidelines.

Thanks again to everyone for doing their part to keep our community healthy.
