Meet the Minerva Mentors

Gianluca Avanzato

Class year: 2018

Home: Oneonta, NY

Major/Minor: major in Political Science; minors in German and Classics (Latin and Ancient Greek)

Career Interests: I plan on pursuing a graduate degree in political theory. After that, I'd like to work in academia, but I'm open to other options, including government.

Activities: I'm the president of Interfaith Youth Core (IFYC) and a member of the Golub House Council. I'm often in the Writing Center, where I tutor and work to organize the space. Additionally, I'm the director of Writing Our Communities, a writing-based program I co-founded.

Personal: Besides academic and extracurricular activities on campus, I greatly enjoy literature and writing. I like learning languages, traveling, and communicating with people. I greatly appreciate nature, and enjoy going on walks and hikes. I also play guitar and write songs.

Tip for Success: Discover your interests and pursue them - there's plenty to learn on your own. Remember, though, that we're at a wonderful college and we are privileged to have abundant resources available to us. Take advantage of these resources in the pursuit of your passions.

Major/Minor: Double Major in Anthropology and Political Science; Psychology minor

Career Interests: I aspire to earn a Ph.D. potentially in Government or Public Policy.

Activities: On campus, I am the co-founder and co-President of the Caribbean Student Association, as well as a member at large of Pi Sigma Alpha and Messa House Council.

Personal: I would like to think of myself as a jet-setter. I am eager to adventure on foreign terrains and discover the endless treasures (and foods) the world has to offer.  I love exploring and whole-heartedly immersing myself in new cultures with an open-mind and wanderlust.

Major: Chinese

Career Interests: In the future, I hope to work either in diplomacy, particularly regarding international educational exchange.

Personal: I am a coxswain and captain of the women's crew team, a tour guide, sports editor for the Concordy, and a fellow in the Writing Center. In my junior year, I studied abroad in Shanghai, China and In my sophomore year, I participated in the New Hampshire Presidential Primary mini-term where I got to meet almost all of the contenders for the 2016 presidential election. In my free time, I love to watch Chopped.

Major/Minor: Mechanical Engineering; Math and German double minor

Career Interests: I want to be an Engineer someday but beyond that I am not sure!

Activities: On campus, I am a member of the Varsity Swim Team, Campus Relations Chair of Gamma Phi Beta, and Vice President of the German Club. 

Personal: In the winter I love skiing and being outside in the snow, and when its warm my favorite thing to do is lay outside in Jackson's Gardens. I cannot get enough of Parks and Rec and I find food documentaries on Netflix very relaxing.

Hometown: Groton, MA

Major/Minor: I'm a Chemistry major with a minor in Mathematics.

Career Interests: At this point, I want to go to graduate school for Organic Chemistry. I'm not sure where I will end up after that, but I definitely want to have a career focused on research and organic synthesis.

Activities: I'm the President of the Women's Club Ice Hockey Team, a member of the Garnet Society, a member of the Honor Council, a tutor in the Organic Chemistry help center, an AOP tutor, and an affiliate caller for the Annual Fund.

Personal: I love hanging out with my friends around campus and spending time outside studying when the weather is nice. I also get cold really easily, so you'll probably find me walking around with a blanket in Wold during the winter.

Major/Minor: Biology/Psychology ID Major

Career Interests: I am an aspiring Physician, and currently interested in the field of Pediatric Oncology

Activities: I am a Tour Guide on campus, involved in a volunteer organization known as Project Sunshine, remain active on the Wold House Minerva Council, and assist in clinical research in

Pediatric Oncology at Albany Medical Center.

Personal: I enjoy hanging out with friends and meeting new people! If you ever see me around campus, don’t hesitate to say hi! I also enjoy reading, listening to music, going to the gym, and generally staying pleasantly busy.

Tips for Success: Take each day one step at a time. Sometimes, it’s easy to become stressed over future assignments and obligations. Remember to take a deep breath, and live in the moment.

Hometown: Newton, MA

Major/Minor: Political Science Major and French & Francophone Studies Minor

Career Interests: Interested in working for and hopefully creating a supranational organization that works with refugees, IDPs, and those seeking a home.

Activities: On campus, I am the VP of Hip Hop Club, I am one of the leaders of Identity Dialogues, and you can also catch me at Caribbean Student Association meetings.

Personal: I love dancing! Whether it be hip hop, salsa, ballet, or tap, I wholly enjoy being able to express myself through dance and choreography. Traveling fills my heart and my mind. Movies fascinate me. Phish Food is the best ice cream flavor

Tips for Success: Don't Fret: Nobody truly knows what they are doing. Listen to yourself. Trust yourself. The world is malleable.
