Assistant Director of Field Education

The School of Social Welfare has approximately 450 students in two professional programs accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, BS and MSW, and a PhD program. At any given time, up to 400 students are undertaking supervised field instruction in human services organizations. The Assistant Director of Field Education coordinates and monitors the placements, participates in faculty governance, and supports all aspects of field educational programming. This position is responsible for supporting the identification and management of field educational programming for the MSW program.  Specific duties include:

  • Identify, secure and monitor field placement assignments for full and part-time students in the MSW program.  Will also provide these services in the management of specialized field placements in the MSW program
  • Serve as field liaison to select students and field agencies, as assigned by the Director of Field Education
  • Assist with overall orientation and training of new field instructors and field liaisons
  • Assist with updating field education documents and other related materials
  • Coordinate and take lead with planning the Field Office's annual Field Institute for field instructors
  • Coordinate and take lead in developing and monitoring international field placements for MSW students
  • Support and enhance faculty involvement in the field education program by participating in governance committees
  • Provide intervention and support to students, field instructors and faculty when problems or issues critical to field education arise
  • Interview students (and when indicated, field agencies) to determine appropriateness for quality field learning experiences
  • Strive to improve the quality and efficiency of services to students, field instructors and field liaisons through use of technology and innovative programming
  • Represent the Field Office in various meetings with students, faculty and community agencies
  • Assist with the review of MSW admissions applications
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Field Education


Required Qualifications:

  • MSW degree from a CSWE-accredited social work program and from a college or university accredited by the US Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization
  • A minimum of two years of post-graduate social work practice experience 
  • Must have served as a field instructor to MSW students
  • Demonstrated competence in practice and collaboration with culturally diverse constituencies
  • Must have supervisory and program management experience
  • Must have strong interpersonal and computer skills

Preferred Additional Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the community and agency resources in and surrounding the Capital District
  • Teaching experience
