Job Description:

Under the supervision of the Co-Directors, the Acquisitions Editor will acquire new manuscripts and oversee publishing process from acquisition, evaluation, review, and presentation to the Editorial Board through transmittal to production, marketing, and sales. Areas of acquisition include education, gender studies, and Hispanic studies, with the opportunity to explore new areas of growth and development. Some travel is required.

Role and Responsibilities: 

  • Review unsolicited query letters, proposals and manuscripts, assess worth and marketability, and recommend acceptance or rejection.
  • Prepare manuscripts for transmittal to production, marketing, and sales.
  • Negotiate and prepare basic book contracts.
  • Work with series editors to review and monitor projects.
  • Seek new manuscripts by letter, phone, and direct contract on campuses and at scholarly conferences.
  • Follow literature in assigned disciplines for manuscript leads.
  • Solicit and contract with potential series editors for new series in promising areas of development.
  • Locate and commission reviewers with specific knowledge or experience in appropriate fields for manuscripts under consideration.
  • Prepare background materials for all manuscripts that are to be presented to the Editorial Board.
  • Attend Editorial Board meetings and implement Editorial Board decisions.
  • Recommend potential Editorial Board members.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • A Master's degree with 1-3 years experience in publishing is required
  • Doctorate is preferred
