Administrative Manager for the RNA Institute, College of Arts and Sciences, SUNY Albany

Established in 1844 and designated a University Center of the State University of New York in 1962, the University at Albany's broad mission of excellence in undergraduate and graduate education, research and public service engages a diverse student body of more than 17,300 students in nine schools and colleges across three campuses.

This is a full-time professional staff position with a 12-month obligation reporting to the Director of The RNA Institute.  The Institute's mission is to develop novel RNA-based technologies for use in basic research and in the analysis, treatment or diagnosis of human diseases or conditions.  The Institute is also committed to the dissemination of research findings, providing an international forum to network with scientific and technological entities and to provide state of the art scientific and technical training. 

The RNA Institute is part of the Life Sciences initiative within the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) at the University at Albany, SUNY.  The Institute employs several researchers, technicians, post docs and students.  The incumbent will work with the Director and faculty to liaise with corporate, industry, academic and government entities to promote the mission of the RNA Institute.  The incumbent will also provide supervision for professional staff and associates who support the research, marketing and outreach functions of the Institute.  

Responsibilities include:

  • Providing general administrative support to the Director of the RNA Institute
  • Supervising administrative staff members
  • Overseeing the daily administrative operations of the Institute
  • Providing administrative support for grant applications, contracts and awards
  • Drafting reports for the Director and Institute including annual grant reports, reports for the CAS Dean, other University offices and external boards
  • Tracking and reporting metrics used to evaluate progress and effectiveness of the Institute
  • Overseeing the management of several Institute accounts
  • Attending Federal, State and corporate funding application meetings
  • Assisting the Director with corporate, industry, academic and government outreach and technology commercialization initiatives
  • Helping to coordinate fund-raising and event planning details for the Annual Symposium
  • Assisting with the recruitment and search process for vacancies and new positions
  • Serving as the liaison with the CAS Dean's Office, Life Sciences Building Staff and other University departments including the Office of Human Resources, the Office of Financial Management and Budget and the Office of the Vice President for Research
  • Serving as the content manager for the RNA Institute website and make updates to the website as needed


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized organization
  • Three years' administrative experience in a university, technical, industrial or scientific setting
  • Two years' experience supervising professional staff
  • Project management experience
  • Excellent skills in organization, planning, and prioritization
  • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in the use of spreadsheets, word processing and web-based tools
  • Applicants must address in their applications their abilities to work with a culturally diverse population.  

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree, particularly an MBA or PhD in a relevant field from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized organization
  • Some scientific or technical experience preferred, or a willingness to learn
  • Experience in strategic planning, fund raising, conference planning, familiarity with University policies and procedures, and a scientific background will be a plus.
