Reporting to an Associate Director of Career Advising, the Assistant Director will serve as lead for a specified “enterprise,” providing students with up-to-date career information, encouraging career exploration, promoting understanding of opportunities, connecting students to mentors, and preparing students for successful internship and post-graduation experiences. To ensure students have access to meaningful and relevant internship and employment opportunities, the Assistant Director will provide career coaching and advising; implement a range of programs for students, alumni, and other members of the Middlebury community; and collaborate with the employer outreach and development team. The Assistant Director will support student engagement efforts by supervising the Peer Career Advisor program and leading effective outreach for students who identify with under-represented groups on campus, including students of color and first-generation students.


Essential Functions

Career Education, Advising, and Student Preparation for Designated Industry/Field(s)

• Coach and advise students on acquisition of skills and experience required for entry into the relevant internships, jobs, and graduate programs; facilitate students’ self-assessment, career exploration and decision-making, goal setting, and internship/job search strategies in individual and group sessions as well as telephone/e-mail consultations; administer and interpret assessment instruments to assist students with determining their career interests and skills; educate students about proper networking protocol; review student resumes and cover letters; and teach effective interviewing techniques.
• Serve as expert within assigned career field(s); address unique issues concerning career development and/or marketplace trends for assigned students and career field(s); expand professional competence with respect to employment trends through research, professional conferences and discussion; disseminate knowledge regarding career development and labor market trends to colleagues and students.
• Develop educational resources, programs, and special events to support assigned field(s); initiate and create resources, programming, and presentations on career issues for under-represented students.
• Observe and remain current with ethical guidelines and legal precedents for client counselor relationships, student records and employment procedures.
• Collect, evaluate, and report on data/outcomes at assigned intervals.

Student Community Engagement & Partnerships

• Lead CCI outreach to Middlebury’s increasingly diverse student body—including support for students of color; first-generation college students; students from low-income backgrounds; LGBTQ+ students; international students; and other students who have been historically underrepresented or marginalized in U.S. higher education—fostering student, staff, and faculty partnerships through regular communication, collaboration, and consultation in order to ensure full student engagement with CCI. In consultation with director of employer outreach and professional networks, identify and cultivate/establish new relationships with organizations that hire under-represented students and help educate employers regarding hiring under-represented students and provide consultation for employers in devising effective strategies for their campus relations and recruiting initiatives.
• In consultation with director of employer outreach and professional networks, cultivate and maintain relationships that bring together students and alumni in assigned field(s); play a key role in advancing Middlebury’s relationship with assigned employers; cultivate effective partnerships with appropriate employers, faculty, campus colleagues, and student organizations regarding strategic design and development of resources and programs/workshops to ensure student engagement and employment outcomes in assigned field(s).
• Travel occasionally to engage with employer partners, alumni, and parents; staff off-campus networking events.


• Review student interest data and develop appropriate strategy for outreach.
• Develop tailored communications for under-represented students, including specific sections of the website.
• Utilize social media and web tools to engage students, share information, and promote opportunities.
• Curate content for targeted career field communications; write and edit educational communications to support enterprise including email communications, web content, social media posts, and student handouts.
• Gather and disseminate current job market data and provide internship and job leads to students.

Administrative Coordination

• Oversee the student staff Peer Career Advisor program, developing orientation and professional development opportunities for student staff; supervise and evaluate student peer career advisers; develop metrics to evaluate success of the program.

General Responsibilities

• Travel occasionally to engage with employer partners, alumni, and parents; staff off-campus networking events
• Facilitate and serve on departmental and college committees as assigned.
• Serve as liaison to Middlebury departments or programs as appropriate; serve on CCI teams as assigned.
• Represent Middlebury College in professional conferences in order to stay current with industry standards and to increase Middlebury’s visibility among professionals in relevant fields.



Bachelor’s degree is required; master’s degree preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Deep understanding of the elite liberal arts education model and subsequent challenges and opportunities presented to the career advising function.
• Knowledge of the job search process and a clear understanding of the role of internships and career education initiatives.
• Able to understand diverse students’ needs and concerns; must possess a clear understanding and value for cultural, social, economic, ethnic, and other forms of diversity.
• Excellent communication skills (written and oral), and strong presentation and networking skills.
• Proven relationship builder and volunteer manager.
• Results-oriented and detail-oriented; must possess project management skills.
• Entrepreneurial attitude; adaptable to change.
• Research, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
• Success working both independently and collaboratively in cross-functional teams.
• Able to communicate the value of a small, private liberal arts college educational experience to outside constituents. 
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and database systems.


• Minimum of three years relevant experience in relevant industry, education, career services, or recruiting.
• Experience creating and implementing programs and managing projects and events; 
• Experience advising liberal arts students and alumni, collaborating with faculty, alumni, and employers, and working with first-generation students and/or other historically underrepresented students will be highly valued.
