Assistant Director, Career and Professional Development, University at Albany, Albany, NY

The University at Albany seeks applicants to serve as an Assistant Director level Career Coach. The successful candidate will work with the Career and Professional Development team to provide coaching and guidance in career planning and development to both undergraduate and graduate students, with a special focus on international students. They would also co-manage the Peer Career Advisor program.  As one of the managers of the Peer Career Advising program, this position includes teaching 1 or 2 three-credit hour classes during the fall and spring semesters, as well as supervising part of the Peer Career Advising cohort along with another Assistant Director.  This position also conducts workshops and programs on career-related topics and works with students to increase engagement with Applied Learning initiatives.  

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide coaching and guidance in career planning and development to all students through one-on-one appointments and during drop-in hours
  • Teach 1 or 2 Peer Career Advisor classes including: lecturing, grading and mentoring students in the class
  • Work with other Assistant Director to continue to develop and improve the Peer Career Advisor program
  • Develop and maintain relationships with faculty to increase outreach to students
  • Collaborate with the Office of International Student and Scholar Services to provide career related programming for international students; train graduate assistants on the issues faced by international students when applying for internships and full time positions
  • Plan, develop and implement career workshops, panels, presentations, and networking events to educate and engage students in the career development process


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree required in Counseling, Student Affairs, Higher Education, or a related area from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Dept. of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization
  • At least 2-5 years of experience in a Career and Professional Development environment or other counseling environment
  • Experience giving presentations to various audiences
  • Familiarity with university career center systems and operating procedures as well as the integration of technology within a career center
  • Knowledge of computerized and paper-based assessment instruments
  • A demonstrated ability to utilize MS PowerPoint, Excel, and Publisher programs; familiarity with social media
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends
  • Ability to work in a diverse learning environment
