Assistant Director, Career Readiness & Professional Development

Job Summary

Oberlin College’s Career Center helps students and recent alumni identify and achieve meaningful career objectives that build upon their Oberlin education and experiences. In line with the direction set by College’s recently approved five-year strategic plan to help students and young alumni “to more intentionally set the stage for their professional journeys,” we seek an individual who can lead the Career Center’s efforts to help students and recent alumni acquire skills and learn strategies that are critical for career readiness and professional development. The ideal candidate is an experienced career educator and coach who can creatively empower students and recent alumni to navigate the job search process, build professional networks, make a successful transition to the workplace, and manage their early careers. This is a full-time, 12-month, Administrative and Professional Staff position in the Division of the Dean of Studies and will report to the Director of the Career Center.


The Assistant Director of Career Readiness & Professional Development will create and manage a body of services, programs and resources that specifically address the skills and tools students and young alumni need to prepare for and manage the job search process as well as the professional skills and knowledge required to launch successful careers. Several valuable skills for Oberlin students and young alumni include networking effectively, creating an impactful job search plan, interviewing and negotiating job offers, as well as oral communication and presentation skills.

Essential Job Functions

1. Design, develop and deliver learning experiences (presentations, cohort experiences, webinars, applied learning experiences, etc.) related to career readiness and professional development 
2. Provide individual and small group career coaching and skill-building opportunities to students and recent alumni
3. Hire, train and supervise the center’s student peer advisors, a group of students trained to offer drop-in advising services
4. Serve as a primary liaison to several academic departments to expand how career development is integrated into the academic experience
5. Collaborate with Career Center colleagues to contribute content to social media platforms, website or other sources of career information
6. Recruit and develop alumni volunteers and other partners to engage with students for career and professional skill building experiences
7. Maintain and report key metrics to measure outcomes and effectiveness
8. Represent the Career Center in local and national professional associations
9. Support all Career Center programs as needed


Required Qualifications

• Minimum of two years experience in career development, professional development, training, human resources or other related field
• Master’s degree
• Exceptional coaching and advising skills
• Skilled in instructional or curriculum design
• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Commitment to delivering services and programs that attract and retain diverse participants and stakeholders
• Comfort with working in a liberal arts academic setting
• Understanding of student development needs

Desired Qualifications

• Experience in higher education
• Certification as a coach or in career-related assessments
• Experience in managing and supervising others
• Project management
