Position Summary

The Assistant Director develops and implements high-impact communications and marketing strategies for the Center for Careers & Internships (CCI), with the goal to maximize ongoing student usage of CCI resources throughout all four years, including promotion of signature programs (with an emphasis on internships, career exploration, and alumni involvement) and a multitude of events and student services. Additional constituencies include alumni, parents, and employers. Serves as principal liaison to Middlebury’s Communications Office, collaborating on: 1) the strategic development and scheduling of marketing and outreach initiatives for both internal and external audiences to advance both the mission of CCI and of the College; 2) the development and effective management of the CCI brand across internal and external information distribution channels, including email, print, web, and social media. Collaborating with the entire CCI team, the Communications and Outreach Specialist works to ensure that all students are engaged in preparing to translate their Middlebury experience into successful pursuit of their post-graduate goals.

Essential Functions

  • Oversees the development of general and specific communications and marketing strategies. Works closely with all CCI staff to develop student, alumni, and employer outreach and supporting material, focusing on signature CCI programs and events, student stories, alumni and professional network connections, graduate outcomes, office resources, and more.
  • Collects and analyzes data on effectiveness of communications and outreach initiatives and develops and implements strategies to address the challenges of marketing to a diverse college-age population.
  • Oversees the development and design of print and digital materials for in-house marketing needs.
  • Works with the Office of Communications, College Advancement, Admissions, and other offices in developing and producing materials for different external audiences.
  • Works with CCI staff and the Office of Communications to develop and effectively manage a consistent CCI brand across internal and external information distribution channels, including email, print, web, and social media.
  • Develops and maintains a communications and outreach year-long schedule, working closely with CCI’s Employer Relations and Events Coordinator and the Office of Communications.
  • Develops a comprehensive marketing and promotion strategy to showcase high-impact, meaningful internship experiences and a growing internships program to students and external audiences. Oversees organization and collection of internships marketing materials, including summer internship student photos and stories.
  • Works with CCI student interns to promote CCI programs and events through student life engagement, including the Commons and Student Activities.
  • Manages website content and serves as part of in-house web team.
  • Researches and assesses developments and trends in Higher Education/career center student outreach, including social media.
  • Works with CCI advising team to produce weekly event and opportunities blogs for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Works with an internal team to create a positive Adirondack House “user experience,” ensuring that the physical space is not only welcoming and inviting for students, employers, and guests but also facilitates an understanding of CCI services provided.
General Responsibilities
  • Works closely with CCI director and CCI Leadership Team as well as other other staff on additional selected projects as needed.
  • Works with Advising Team to provide support to students on internship and career exploration.
  • Occasional evening and weekend hours during peak programming times.

Qualifications

Education

Bachelor’s degree

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Proven knowledge and experience with developing communication strategies, campaigns, and programs as well as design and production of print and digital material.
  • Demonstrated ability to determine best use of communications tools to build and engage audiences, especially a college-aged population.
  • Commitment to and knowledge of working with diverse audiences.
  • Working knowledge of Creative Suite programs (InDesign, Photoshop, etc.).
  • Experience managing social media applications.
  • Excellent computer skills (PC and Mac), including experience with Microsoft Office.
  • Photography and video experience.
  • Experience with creating and managing web site content with a CMS (e.g. Drupal, Wordpress).
  • Excellent writing and editing skills required, including ability to write copy for email, print, social media, and web content targeted to a varied student audience as well as other constituencies (alumni, parents, employers).
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, professionalism, and enthusiasm are essential as this position interacts with various internal and external constituents.
  • Proven ability to work independently and as a multi-team player and to contribute to a collaborative environment.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with experience in oversight and planning.
  • Appreciation for and understanding of the elite liberal arts experience.
  • Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends.
Experience

Minimum of five years professional communications and marketing experience required. Some background in Higher Education strongly desired and/or demonstrated experience in working with college-aged and diverse populations.
