Assistant Director of Employer Relations and Campus Employment, Utica College

This is a newly created position in the Utica College Office of Career Services, which has recently been reorganized to include the Office of Student Employment. The incumbent will assume employer relations functions for external employers in specified industry clusters and assist in the creation and ongoing oversight of an elevated campus-based student employment and internship program. The incumbent will have staff supervisory responsibilities and will report to the Director of Career Services.

This position supports the institutional goal of educational quality through the development of high impact work-based learning opportunities, supporting retention through co-curricular offerings, and creating a student cohort that will have the work experience and transferable skills that are most appealing to employers. The position also supports the accessibility and acquisition of rewarding careers through the employer relations efforts.

Employer Relations Program (external):

Actively participate in the identification, recruitment, and relationship management of prospective employers through individual meetings, online networking, and attendance at regional events hosted by professional associations, chambers of commerce, individual employers, and consortium colleges.

Maintain and grow relationships with existing employers to facilitate interest in and recruitment of Utica College students/recent alumni.

Promote the career management system, UC Career Connect, to employers and share opportunities with relevant students, alumni, faculty, and staff.

Create marketing materials and strategies used in employer recruiting efforts and to promote opportunities to students/recent alumni using traditional and new media.

Develop a robust on-campus recruiting program, including the coordination of fairs, networking events, industry panels, and on-campus interviews.

Coordinate an employer site-visit program for students and key constituents to attend for career exploration and networking purposes.

Cultivate and sustain relationships with faculty, internship coordinators, staff, and other key constituents to support the employer relations program.

Document, track, and report employer development efforts, using quantitative and qualitative measures; maintain current contact information in employer databases.

Campus Employment Program (internal):

Play an integral role in creating, implementing, and overseeing an elevated campus-based student employment and internship (non-credit bearing) program to serve as a high impact practice for students.

Build partnerships with student supervisors to ensure employment and internship opportunities meet set criteria and standards, are sustainable, and are assessable, mapping up to student learning goals and the College’s Key Intellectual Skills.

Develop and assist in the delivery of orientations and ongoing training and professional development for student supervisors participating in the campus employment program.

Review and evaluate the program for continuous improvement.

Student Development:

Meet with students as needed and provide targeted resources and services to prepare them to enter the workforce.

Develop and present industry/major-specific information on a range of career development topics to students in classrooms and during workshops.



5+ years’ experience in college career services, experiential/work-based learning, human resources, or a closely related field.

Experience with employer relations and/or college student recruitment.

Familiarity with internship and experiential/work-based learning development and oversight.

Experience supervising and mentoring professional staff.

Master’s degree in college student development, higher education administration, human resources, or a closely related field. Extensive experience will be considered in lieu of degree requirement.

Working knowledge of Banner system preferred.

Demonstrated leadership and project management skills.

Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to easily establish rapport when meeting new people.

Polished presentation style with excellent verbal and written communications skills.

Demonstrated commitment to exemplary customer service to all constituents (employers, students, alumni, faculty, staff, and parents).

Highly motivated with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.

Aptitude for detail-orientation with the ability to analyze data and generate reports.

Computer proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Publisher), career management software (Purple Briefcase), professional networking sites (LinkedIn), Twitter, and other web-based career resources.
