Associate Director and Pre-Law Advisor

Reporting to the Director of the Bates Career Development Center the Associate Director and Pre-Law Advisor will work closely with a wide variety of students and alumni with a focus on pre-law and graduate school advising (Humanities and Social Sciences), general career counseling and specific industry career advising.  This position is responsible for designing and creating a career community for Law, Policy and Public Service as part of the career center’s new focus on designing intentional career communities across a spectrum of career interests. The Associate Director and Pre-Law Advisor will be responsible for engaging students, faculty, staff, alumni and employers to facilitate connections and opportunities aligned with student’s career aspirations.

The Associate Director and Pre-Law Advisor is expected to contribute to the overall success of the career center by providing individual career counseling, programming, educational workshops, self-assessment workshops and resources. The Associate Director will collaborate with all college constituencies to continuously expand career education, experiential learning, and employment opportunities.

Qualifications:

Education:

The successful candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree.  A Master’s degree in Counseling or related advanced degree is highly preferred.

Experience/Skills:

  • 3 to 5 years of experience in areas that relate to career development in higher education.
  • 3+ years’ experience in advising students.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of working with a diverse student population.
  • Experience with utilizing self-assessment instruments such as the Strong Interest Inventory, Strengths, MBTI, SkillScan or others.
  • Impeccable organizational skills and ability to coordinate resources and staff within the college community.
  • Strong program development and project management skills.
  • Strong communication skills (written, verbal and presentation). The ability to effectively communicate with students, faculty, staff and employers.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to develop and maintain relationships.  Must be flexible, collaborative and have a positive attitude.
  • Ability to translate needs and concepts into programmatic actions.
  • Ability to remain composed, friendly, and demonstrate poise under stress while working in a deadline driven environment.
  • Ability to work individually and as part of a team.
  • Ability and willingness to work weekends, evenings and other non-traditional schedules.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusivity and to serving the needs of a culturally and educationally diverse and inclusive community with diplomacy and tact.
  • Successful completion of a background check.
