Position Details

The Gordon Career Center’s innovative approach to career education encourages students to design their own careers by exploring the intersection between their interests, the skills they have and wish to acquire, and market demand.

Reporting to the Director of the Gordon Career Center, the Associate Director for Career Advising is a member of the management team and responsible for overseeing and delivering a comprehensive career development program, supervising career and pre-professional advisors, and providing career counseling to students.

Responsibilities include:

Supervise career advising staff, including pre-professional advisory functions; insure annual goal setting is in line with strategic priorities of the Gordon Career Center; conduct annual performance evaluations.

Work with Director to develop programs that support the strategic themes of the Gordon Career Center and the overall career preparation of Wesleyan students.

Advise students on how to explore their interests, skills, and market demand to ensure that they are well educated in the career planning process.

Work with students, individually and in groups, to help them prepare for interviews, refine their resumes and social media profiles, evaluate offers and negotiate compensation, and build professional connections in their areas of interest.

Advise students who are applying to graduate school in the arts and sciences.

Liaise with Wesleyan alumni and parents, including Wesleyan’s designated alumni professional networks and affinity groups, to provide connections for students to professional life off campus.

Build relationships with and deliver related programming to academic departments, student groups, athletic teams, and other members of the campus community.

Similar duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree and five years of experience in college career services or closely related field or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Proven ability to help students assess their interests, skills and values and apply them to the world of work.

Demonstrated ability with written and oral communications, including presenting to both small and large groups.

Proven appreciation and respect for racial, ethnic, gender, socioeconomic and sexual identity diversity.

Strong evidence of organizational and time management skills. Ability to learn new technology platforms quickly.

Preferred Qualifications

Evidence of innovative career development programming with demonstrated impact on students. Experience managing a diverse team of professionals.
