Position Summary:

As a member of the university’s core sustainability team, the primary role of the Campus Sustainability Planner is to work collaboratively with the campus community to conceive, develop, implement, and measure new sustainability initiatives in support of the Virginia Tech Climate Action Commitment and Sustainability Plan. There are five main responsibilities in this position: (1) Develop and implement the undergraduate student internship program, (2), Conceive, develop, and implement new programs that expand and strengthen the campus sustainability program, (3) Develop and implement campus-wide sustainability outreach and engagement programs, (4) Coordinate strategic planning efforts for the sustainability office, and (5) Document, measure, and report on campus sustainability initiatives. Successful candidates will be able to independently make decisions and occasionally work autonomously in developing and implementing new programs with a strategic intent to advance the campus sustainability culture. This position will also actively seek out grant funding opportunities for the University and prepare and submit these grants. Additionally, this position will maintain a campus-wide public presence to nurture and expand the network of sustainability support on campus to include being a guest lecturer in undergraduate classes and other community outreach.


Required Qualifications:

- Bachelor’s degree in urban or environmental planning, environmental science, environmental engineering, or a related field or equivalent training and/or experience. 
- Considerable experience in the development and implementation of sustainability initiatives in an institutional environment. 
- Experience working with undergraduate students in a team setting to advance collective goals
- Must be able to demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the principles of sustainability and how they relate to organizations and university campuses.
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite and a Windows operating system environment. 
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. 
- Ability to set priorities and manage several projects simultaneously. 
- Ability to work in a team environment. 
- Ability to provide effective communications and exhibit excellent interpersonal skills; 
- Ability to prepare and present clear and concise presentations.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Masters degree in sustainability or related field. 
- Previous experience working on sustainability initiatives in a Higher Education environment and familiarity with the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) and the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, and Rating System (STARS). 
– Previous experience in/with:

  • marketing & public relations and in establishing partnerships and collaborating with numerous stakeholders,
  • developing a sustainability literacy curriculum, and/or workshop facilitation.
