Climate Resilience in Urban Campuses + Communities Fellow Project Coordinator (Part-Time)

Los Angeles, CA; Portland, OR; Phoenix, AZ - Posted on: Tuesday 10/11/16

Position Description

Second Nature a Boston-based nonprofit working to proactively build a sustainable and positive global future through leadership networks in higher education, is seeking applicants for 3 Fellows to coordinate the Climate Resilience in Urban Campuses + Communities (CRUX) project. CRUX is a unique multi-city partnership created to pilot the implementation of the resilience-related elements of the newly launched Climate Commitment. We have selected three cities, with dense urban areas and at-risk populations for this initial phase of review: Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Portland. Each city houses a project “cluster” made up of an Urban Serving University (USU) partner, a community college partner, and community partners identified by those campuses. Each Fellow will serve one of the city clusters.

Community College

Los Angles

California State University, Northridge

Los Angeles Valley College

Arizona State University

South Mountain Community College

Portland State University

Mt. Hood Community College

The CRUX project goals are to:

  • Facilitate implementation of a nationally scalable strategy to develop climate resilience with campuses and communities, and
  • Learn with and from these clusters as they complete the first two resilience benchmarks of the new Climate Commitment planning framework. These two benchmarks are:
  1. Create a campus/community task force or introduce the resilience planning framework into an existing campus/community structure
  2. Complete a resilience capacity assessment including preliminary progress indicators

The three Fellows will be selected for their ability to coordinate program logistics within each CRUX city. The CRUX City Fellows will work with Second Nature staff to disseminate resilience planning information and learning between city clusters, between the USU and community colleges, and with local experts. These Fellows will be hired through Second Nature and hosted at the USU, for coordination with both the USU and community college partner, working collaboratively across the campus / community task forces in each city. The data captured from the Fellows’ experiences of the process will be essential in completing an evaluation for the first two benchmarks in the Commitments to be shared across urban campuses and the Second Nature’s national Climate Leadership Network.

Excellent coordination, writing, and communication skills are essential, including the requirement to keep a personal reflective journal of the planning process experience. The ability to build networks and relationships across diverse organizations and partners, and to oversee the logistics of a CRUX cluster will be the primary responsibility of the Fellow. Candidates must have strong proficiency in productivity software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, calendaring tools, and preferably OneNote or equivalent) as well as collaboration tools, such as GoogleDocs. Experience with mind mapping software and publishing software (such as Publisher) preferred. Ideal candidates will demonstrate knowledge of fundamental sustainability principles, an interest in, or knowledge of community planning/organizing, and be comfortable with the use of scientific knowledge in public decision-making.

Position Details

This fellowship position will require approximately 10 hours per week commitment, beginning in November, 2016. The Fellow needs to be located in the city where they will be working. The position offers a $7,200 annual stipend and lasts for 2 years.
