The Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy (MHLC) is a land trust working to conserve open space and natural habitats across a three county region of New York State; Albany, Schenectady and Montgomery counties. We are seeking a highly motivated individual with a commitment to conservation who is interested in growing with the organization. This is a full-time position that will report to the Development Director and work closely with all staff.

The Position will involve a wide variety of tasks, with a strong focus on developing and disseminating communications for the organization through various media, both electronic and print. In addition, the individual will work closely with the Development Director on a variety of tasks in support of organizational fundraising activities and outreach events.

We are seeking a highly creative individual with a strong artistic sensibility and an ability to translate concepts into effective communications to enhance the organization’s visibility and branding. A background in graphic design and ability to work on a variety of digital graphics platforms is required. Candidates should also have a passion for writing. Experience working for a conservation organization is beneficial but not required. Occasional outside activities such as hiking on MHLC preserves and visiting conservation lands may be required.

A successful applicant must have excellent written and verbal skills, be well organized and maintain attention to details. The position will require occasional evening and weekend work.

Technical training will be provided by staff as well as through outside professional resources as needed.

Position Responsibilities:

1. Communications

a. Assist with development and implementation of an annual communications and outreach plan and calendar.

b. Design and produce marketing and event-related materials including newsletters, brochures, flyers, annual report, postcards, emails through Constant Contact, and other promotional materials to communicate the Conservancy’s mission and successes.

c. Develop and maintain the Conservancy’s website, providing updates, engaging content, news and information.

d. Compose and post engaging and effective social media content across various platforms.

e. Compose and place public relations materials including press releases, media advisories, and other media communications. Place Conservancy events in local community calendars. Connect and maintain relationships with influential media outlets and journalists to consistently place stories about organization’s news and other initiatives. Employ marketing analytics techniques to gather important data (social media, web analytics, rankings etc.).

f. Work with vendors including printers and designers to develop materials and merchandise as needed.

2. Outreach activities

a. Provide support for a wide range of development activities including the creation and implementation of fundraising events to engage and cultivate donors.

b. Plan, promote and implement activities to engage members and the public including annual events, field trips, hikes and educational and promotional displays.

c. Work with Stewardship and Volunteer Coordinator to create materials and communications as needed to support stewardship and conservation work.

d. Assist with educational and outreach programs for Board and Advisory Board.

3. Additional Organizational Support

a. Maintain, organize and update the organization’s photographic library

b. Assist in preparing and organizing a variety of board materials and documents.

c. Oversee the development and marketing of Conservancy merchandise.

Qualifications

A degree in communications, marketing/advertising, graphic design, creative writing or other relevant academic training. Experience working with a non-profit organization is desirable.

Qualifications

 Passion for land conservation and interest in learning more about how land trusts build community and connect people to land.

 Skilled in creating, editing, and promoting written and visual content.

 Strong computer skills with a variety of applications, including the Adobe Suite, WordPress, and a willingness to learn new programs as needed. Programs frequently used include Etapestry, Microsoft Office, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat Pro and Photoshop.

 Experience working with various online marketing and social media platforms. Understanding of website design and website programming, including HTML is desired. Other programming experience with CSS and JavaScript, among others, is a plus.

 Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated and a self-starter with a flair for dealing with diverse stakeholders. Ability to organize and set work priorities in a busy office environment. Ability to maintain confidentiality.

 A friendly, outgoing personality that enjoys working with a variety of people and is comfortable meeting new people and engaging them in the work of the organization.

 Ability to perform a variety of tasks, working both independently and as part of a team.

 Must be able to provide own transportation to provide for occasional office needs and attend meetings and various special events (mileage reimbursed).
