The Communications Specialist will be responsible for creating and managing the print and digital public relations/marketing/social media efforts of the NYS Writers Institute. The candidate will build the Institute's brand, coordinate all external communications, and develop communication strategies to reach the Institute's existing audiences and build new audiences.

Duties include:

  • Guiding the strategy for the Writers Institute's digital and social media communication on the Institute's website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, podcasts, streaming video, etc., and tracking the level of engagement with social media platforms
  • Leading the generation of online digital content that engages audiences, and mentoring staff in contributing content for digital media platforms
  • Coordinating website updates and maintenance
  • Staying up to date with digital media developments
  • Writing rich and creative publicity materials, including press releases, brochures, newsletters, and other promotional materials, and coordinating their distribution across all print and digital media
  • Coordinating the graphic production of Institute publicity materials including print and digital content
  • Managing media relations and maximizing media opportunities
  • Assisting with the creation of audience development/community outreach projects for both on-campus and off-campus audiences
  • Providing event coverage including guest transportation, video and audio taping of events, and posting live social media at events

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Marketing, Public Relations, Communications, Digital Media or other relevant field from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization
  • Two to three years experience in a professional public relations/communications position
  • Highly collaborative with experience in developing and implementing communications strategies
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills
  • Excellent knowledge of and experience with social media platforms
  • Ability to work with all constituent groups including University public communication offices, Friends of Writing, Development office, and program collaborators
  • Self-starter, able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Experience with graphics programs, i.e. Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop, QuarkXPress, Final Cut Pro, MS Office including Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and Drupal
  • Highly creative with experience in identifying target audiences and devising digital and print campaigns that inform and engage
  • Ability to work evenings and the occasional weekend
  • Applicants must address their ability to work with a culturally diverse population.

Preferred Qualification:

  • Experience with audio and video taping and editing
