Launched June 2013, the Center for the Urban River at Beczak (CURB) is an alliance of Sarah Lawrence College and the Beczak Environmental Education Center. The mission of CURB is to advance environmental knowledge and stewardship by providing high quality K-12 environmental education for the local community, establishing a regional hub for research and monitoring focused on Hudson River estuary and urban watershed issues, and serving as a welcoming open community space for a variety of civic and cultural activities.

The College seeks a Director of Education to supports the mission of the center by developing education program curriculum, teaching various K-12 environmental education programs, teacher trainings, and related programs for 4,000-5,000 annual visitors, supervising education staff and interns, and providing outreach to schools and other collaborative community partners.

 

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

• B.S. in a natural science, education or related degree and at least 5 years related experience teaching environmental education in an informal setting. Master’s Degree can be substituted for 2 years’ experience. At least 2 years’ experience must be at a supervisory level. 
• Knowledge of river and estuary biology, ecology, habitats, etc. and a passion for the environment.
• Fluency with Microsoft Office software.
• Ability to travel occasionally and attend some evening events.
• Excellent organizational, communication and writing skills.
• Experience and comfort working in an outdoor setting, regardless of weather conditions.

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge specific to the Hudson River estuary: history, biology, and current issues, including climate change. 
• Knowledge of NYS Learning Standards. 
• Experience designing and conducting educational assessments.
• Grant writing and reporting experience including state and federal sources (DECEPANOAA, etc.)

NOTE: Start date is somewhat flexible but we’re aiming for late August/early September.
