Exploratory Adviser, Grinnel College

Grinnell College’s Center for Careers, Life, and Service (CLS) is seeking a passionate, student-centered professional to join their growing team as an exploratory adviser. As an integral part of the CLS’s broader mission of empowering students and alumni to live, learn, and work with meaning and purpose, this position serves an essential role in advising, mentoring, and assisting first- and second-year students. Working in close collaboration with colleagues in the CLS and across the broader campus community, the exploratory adviser will work to crystalize the notion that a career encompasses one’s professional, civic, and personal aspirations.

The exploratory adviser will promote strategic career exploration as an integral, valued element of the liberal arts learning experience by helping students identify relevant and meaningful professional, personal, and civic exploration opportunities. Under the supervision of the assistant dean and director of advising and exploration, this professional will work collaboratively to support students as they:
1) assess their values, strengths, and interests; 
2) connect and network with others to build professional relationships; 
3) explore professional, personal, and civic options; 
4) engage in high impact experiential learning experiences to gain skills and insights; 
5) reflect on their experiential learning and exploration in light of their goals, values, skills, and interests; and 
6) synthesize what they have learned in order to advance or refine their priorities and goals.

In addition to their advising responsibilities, the exploratory adviser will conduct campus outreach and programming in partnership with student groups, academic departments, Athletics, Student Affairs, the Office of Academic Advising, and the Office of International Student Affairs, among others.



Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants need to possess excellent advising skills and have a strong understanding of student and professional development. The candidate must demonstrate experience with and a passion for working with students who lack clarity and a sense of direction regarding their post-college ambitions. The successful candidate will also be familiar with a range of exploration strategies (e.g., informational interviewing) and experiential learning practices (e.g., applying for an internship). The candidate should possess a demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with students as well as with faculty, staff, alumni, and recruiters. Outstanding communication (written and verbal) and problem solving skills are required. The ideal candidate will have a proven ability to work with a diverse student body.

Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree along with at least three years of experience in career development, higher education, or a similar field. Candidates with a master’s in student development, counseling, higher education, or related field must possess at least one year of advising experience in the aforementioned fields.
