Facilities Engineer

Schenectady County Office of Facilities is searching for candidates to fill the position of Facilities Engineer.  This position involves performance of advanced professional facilities engineering work for the construction, remodeling, renovation, and maintenance of buildings and facilities including the design of HVAC, electrical, and other building systems.  The incumbent is in charge of projects in the field, design of projects in an office, or engaged in some special phase of engineering or activities in the field and office for 29 County buildings totaling approximately 1 million square feet.  The work is performed under the general direction of the Director of Facilities, with considerable leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgment in the setting of work priorities and the application of the appropriate regulations and prescribed procedures to task performance.    A Facilities Engineer provides project management and gives advice, instruction and supervision on the more difficult technical problems to outside engineering and construction contractors, lower level engineering staff and construction crews.  The incumbent does related work as required.


  • Prepares, reviews, and revises plans, specifications and designs of electrical, HVAC, and facilities projects for the construction, renovation, and maintenance of County facilities including but not limited to the Jail, office buildings, Courthouse, Libraries, Public Works, Nursing Home, Ice rink and Airport tower;
  • Prepares, reviews, and revises plans, specifications and designs for renovation and rehabilitation projects for County facilities including roofing systems, building exteriors, interior space needs evaluation and design, lighting improvements, elevator systems, fire alarm systems, security systems, building management systems and control systems;
  • Provides project management for construction, renovation, and maintenance projects for County facilities including planning, scheduling, budgeting, and coordination with engineers, architects, and contractors as necessary;
  • Participates in field surveys, inspection and data-taking for the purpose of collecting information to serve as the basis for preparation of estimates, plans and specifications for County building and facilities projects;
  • Supervises staff engineer and other assigned Office of Facilities staff;
  • Assists in the instruction and development of subordinate employees in performing the duties and work of the Office of Facilities and in the operation and maintenance of equipment assigned to the department;
  • Prepares engineering estimates, specifications and bidding documents for materials, equipment and construction projects for various County agencies and departments;
  • Provides engineering advice and expertise in the administration of Federal, State and County programs such as the New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code, Energy Conservation Code, etc.;
  • Participates in office operations of the Office of Facilities for purchasing supplies and equipment, maintenance of equipment, maintenance of filing system for correspondence, technical reference materials, maps and plans;
  • Makes field investigations to insure compliance with engineering specifications;
  • Prepares a variety of records and reports;
  • Performs a variety of related work as required.



Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering plus six (6) years of experience in the design and operation of large scale commercial or industrial HVAC, electrical, and facilities systems, of which two (2)years shall include project management of large scale construction projects;


Must possess a valid New York State driver’s license at time of appointment, and must maintain such license throughout the tenure of appointment.

The salary range for this position is $75,000 - $86,505.  Excellent benefit package includes New York State retirement, generous health, dental, vacation, sick and personal time.
