Darrow School, a small independent, co-ed, boarding/day school for grades 9-12, located on the New York State side of the Berkshires, offers an innovative, individually-focused college-preparatory curriculum, featuring a unique combination of dynamic classroom instruction, active learning, and environmental stewardship. Students learn within an atmosphere that supports intellectual curiosity, creativity, and experimentation. Darrow School faculty and staff are fully engaged in the life of a boarding school beyond the academic day as well, supporting students in a range of co-curricular programming including athletics, residential life, weekend activities, and signature programs like Hands-to-Work, Winterm and Spring Term. Darrow School’s mission is to create a community of learning able to empower students with a wide variety of backgrounds and abilities, building on each student’s individual talents and interests to inspire enduring confidence for success in college and life.

Teaching at a boarding school is different from teaching anywhere else. It is a way of life more than it is a job. The academic program includes traditional core curriculum as well as a large variety of elective courses. In addition to creating learning environments in the classroom, other responsibilities include spending time with students in the dorms, coaching and/or leading extra-curricular activities, advising and weekend responsibilities.

Darrow School seeks a Health and Wellness Coordinator who will further design and implement our Health and Wellness program, a comprehensive curriculum that integrates wellness practices within all aspects of Darrow life. The program is designed to help students transition to high school and develop the necessary skills to thrive in college and later life. This person will lead Health and Wellness seminars, workshops, and evening/weekend programming; develop and oversee a Peer Education Program; and collaborate with the School Nurse, School Counselor, Athletic Director, and Dean of Students to identify and support individual students.

We are looking for people with a proven track record of actively collaborating with teens to solve problems. Our college-preparatory curriculum engages students in all types of subject matter through discussion inside the classroom, and direct experience outside the classroom, where they conduct experiments, perform project-based assignments, and use the Darrow environment as a living laboratory. Supported by our expert faculty, Darrow students actively participate in their own education.

Teaching Responsibilities:

  • Plan and teach curriculum in accordance with the school’s mission and the philosophy and values of Darrow’s Active Curriculum
  • Create student-centered wellness programming
  • Plan and execute weekly grade level Health and Wellness programming covering a range of topics including stress management, conflict resolution, substance use, hygiene, healthy relationships, and nutrition.
  • Develop and execute informal methods of incorporating Health and Wellness into student life.
  • Promote the general progress and well-being of students
  • Attend weekly faculty meetings and participate actively in discussionsin an ongoing exchange in information and support with a close-knitstaff
  • Attend faculty in-service sessions, as well as opening and closingmeetings
  • Work closely with other faculty and staff to ensure cross-curricular approaches, and integration of health and wellness programming into the classroom curriculum.
  • Work closely with residential staff to incorporate health and wellness programming into dorm life.


Each faculty member will be assigned students to serve as their advisor. That of mentor, academic counselor, communicator, defender, contact, host, and institution representative are but some of the hats advisors are expected to wear. Perhaps, however, the role may be summed up in three categories: knowledge, guidance, and contact — each separate but interrelated and overlapping. The Advisor is an important communications link between the student, teachers and family. Advisors meet briefly with their advisees several
times over the week and often arrange for longer sessions to discuss academic progress, sports, and other concerns that arise during the year.

House Parent (Residential Duties): 

Full time faculty either reside in a dorm or live in school housing associated with a dorm. As a House Parent you are directly responsible for the care and well-being of all the students living in or visiting your house. Although you will find that this responsibility falls primarily at duty times, you should be prepared to respond to problems at other times when necessary. The duties of the house parent lie in three general areas: health and safety of students, social and emotional growth of students, and the maintenance and cleanliness of the buildings in which they live. Houseparents work with student leaders to create a positive and intentional dorm culture. You should set an example which demonstrates compliance with all school, local, state and federal rules and laws.

Coaching/Extra Curricular Activities:

Ordinarily a faculty member coaches or supervises an activity in the afternoon two out of three seasons. Some assignments are in the athletics program where teams compete typically on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons. Other assignments may include advising clubs, or other programs that enhance the educational experience of students.



Preferred Qualifications:
● MSW or MA/MS in Health Sciences, Public Health, Counseling, Psychology, Nursing, or related field.
● Experience developing and implementing holistic health curriculum

Minimum Qualifications:
● BA/BS/BSW in Health Sciences, Public Health, Psychology, Nursing or related field
● Ability to coach one or more sport and/or lead an afternoon program
● Strong organizational and interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively with all stakeholders, including administration, faculty, parents and students
● Ability to drive the school’s vehicle’s; training will be provided
● Ability to work outdoors
● Valid driver’s license
● Experience in a residential program for adolescents
● Good communications skills, both oral and written
● Commitment to the 24 hours a day, 7 days a week life of a boarding school
● An educational philosophy consistent with the mission of the school
