Impact America AmeriCorps Member (December Start)
AL - Posted: 12/02/16 | SHARE:
Organizational Description: Many young adults tend to have negative perceptions of people living in poverty, people struggling to get by. Or, worse, they tend not to think much about them at all. As our communities become more homogeneous, it is easier to become isolated from many of the problems facing families and children today. Impact America provides an opportunity for recent graduates to engage with their communities in a meaningful way, broadening their perspectives and making a real impact. Impact America has a limited number of positions starting at the end of the fall semester in 2016 (as early as December 12, 2016). End date is flexible and partially determined by candidate’s preferences and/or chosen location of service (but not earlier than April 28, 2017). Positions starting in December will be available in Birmingham, AL; Montgomery, AL; and Huntsville, AL; and may involve some travel within Alabama and in other states. AmeriCorps Members serving with Impact America engage with communities through two of Impact’s initiatives: SaveFirst and FocusFirst. SaveFirst provides free tax preparation to facilitate economic improvement for working families. FocusFirst ensures that children in urban and rural communities receive comprehensive vision care during their crucial formative years.
Start Date: December 19, 2016
End Date: May 31, 2017
Position Description: Individuals who serve as a Corps Member with Impact America spend a term of service after graduation at a nationally recognized organization working to mitigate the effects of poverty, while also gaining professional experience and a broadened perspective. Corps Members execute SaveFirst and FocusFirst as well as recruit and manage the service of college students as they participate in those initiatives. Corps Members are in the community every day, collaborating with community partners and interacting with a diverse group of people, ranging from preschoolers to college students to working parents. The following provides a general idea of what service with each initiative entails: SaveFirst: Obtain certification as an Advanced Volunteer Tax Preparer. Conduct tax trainings to prepare college students on tax law. Manage students’ service at communitybased sites. Review and electronically file tax returns. Communicate with taxpayers to ensure they understand the components of their tax returns and remain in federal and state tax law compliance. FocusFirst: Receive training to operate the Spot digital screening camera. Develop relationships with childcare administrators. Conduct vision screenings at Head Start and daycare centers. Process results of screenings and organize data to be distributed back to childcare centers in order to ensure that followup care is provided for all children who need it. Lead groups of college students on vision screenings.
Skills Required: Successful candidates will exhibit a commitment to improving the lives of economically disadvantaged families, a record of community service and/or civic engagement, leadership skills, the ability to work well with a diverse group of individuals (e.g., college students, children, community partners), flexibility in a fastpaced environment, and a positive attitude.
