The Instructional Developer, reporting to the Associate Director for Instructional Technology, works as part of the Information Technology Services (ITS) division to provide educational technology consulting and training to the faculty for technology-enabled pedagogy and online/blended/flipped course design.  In this capacity this position provides administration and end-user support for Learning Management System (LMS) service offerings, and identifies, evaluates, and recommends innovative use of educational technologies.  The Instructional Developer analyzes technical solutions to educational and pedagogical projects, takes initiative to investigate opportunities and challenges with existing and emerging technologies, resolve problems, propose strategies, and develop action plans with a vision for quality and scalable support. This position collaborates effectively with multiple campus constituencies and participates in activities that support UAlbany's engagement across SUNY as relates to online education. 

The Instructional Developer is the primary point of contact for the faculty's engagement with educational technology services.  Under the direction of the Associate Director, the incumbent aligns the faculty's pedagogical needs with capacities of IT services to achieve university objectives, collaborating on project teams with ITS professionals and offices to support the University's overall IT service portfolio.  This position coordinates through partnerships with the Institute for Teaching, Learning, and Academic Leadership, the University Libraries, and academic departments and program committees to contribute to a vibrant ecosystem of IT and pedagogical excellence. 

Duties:

  • Provide consultation to the faculty for alignment of educational technology capabilities with pedagogy and development of high-quality online and blended courses
  • Facilitate professional development programs and events, guiding instructors on a path to innovation with current and emerging technologies
  • Collaborate effectively with ITS staff and multiple campus constituencies on projects to explore, evaluate, implement and assess current and emerging technologies and their effective application
  • Responsible for handling incidents, problems and service requests related to the end-user support of the LMS service offerings
  • Provide expert guidance on the use of LMS services and features, and support faculty on design and development of multimedia course materials
  • Develop resources such as tutorials, workshops, and webinars to engage faculty with instructional technology and online pedagogy
  • Coordinate and supervise student assistants in supporting faculty projects

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Educational Technology, Information Technology, Information Science, or related discipline from a college or university accredited by the US Deptartment of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization
  • Minimum 2 years progressively responsible or expansive work experience in instructional design, educational technology, web design, project management, and education; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Familiarity with theories of learning/instructional design and understanding of best practices related to technology-enhanced teaching and learning
  • Familiarity with features of LMS service offerings such as Blackboard Learn or similar (e.g. Moodle, Canvas, Desire2Learn, etc.), including add-ons and LTI extensions
  • Excellent communication skills, including professional experience in the development and delivery of presentations, workshops and/or trainings in an educational setting
  • Strong organization, time management, interpersonal, and communication abilities to carry initiatives to success
  • Ability to work effectively both individually and in alignment with team and organizational goals
  • Understanding of multimedia tools in online teaching and learning, such as Photoshop, Captivate, Camtasia, mobile apps, lecture/screen capture, and video applications

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Educational Technology, Information Technology, Information Science, or related discipline from a college or university accredited by the US Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization
  • Experience supporting faculty in a teaching/learning environment
  • Experience developing online courses
  • Experience teaching in a formal educational setting (classroom and/or online), preferably using a course management system for instruction
  • Demonstrated experience administering LMS service offerings (preferably Blackboard)
  • Ability to successfully initiate, organize, lead/manage, and complete projects as part of a team
  • Demonstrated use of development tools for creating interactive/eLearning content (e.g. Flash, Captivate, Camtasia, VoiceThread, Dreamweaver, etc.)
  • Familiarity with the use of programming/markup languages related to online learning (e.g. HTML, XML, CSS, Java, JavaScript, etc.)
  • Knowledge of universal design for accessible online courses and content
