The Chemistry Department Laboratory Technician is responsible for procuring and preparing reagents, equipment, teaching aids, and other materials for chemistry laboratory instruction and research. This includes preparation, set up and break down of teaching labs in coordination with faculty; ordering supplies, delivering them to labs, tracking and reconciling expenses, and entering them into an online inventory system; and washing of glassware and maintaining cleanliness and organization of laboratory rooms. The Laboratory Technician is also responsible for training and supervising a group of work-study students and ensuring that all safety procedures are followed.
The position requires an Associates degree in Chemistry (including coursework in general, organic, and analytical chemistry) (Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or Biochemistry preferred), with 1-3 years experience with solution preparation, instrument utilization, and recordkeeping. In addition, knowledge of chemical safety procedures, multitasking skills, the ability to balance the needs of many faculty members, and the flexibility to adapt to changing department needs are highly desirable. Physical requirements include lifting and carrying up to 30 lbs. Must also be safety conscious and able to work with a diverse group of faculty, staff, and students.
