The Phyllis Bornt Branch Library and Literacy Center provides a full range of library services with an increased emphasis on literacy in all its forms – reading, health, financial and digital literacy, with a special focus on early literacy. The Literacy Outreach Coordinator will work to promote and further engage the Schenectady community with our literacy initiatives. We are looking for someone to promote our literacy programs, to establish literacy partnerships and to strengthen existing ones. The candidate will work with library staff to ensure that the Bornt Branch Library and Literacy Center gains Family Place Library recognition, as contracted within the grant funded by the Schenectady Foundation for this purpose.

The position requires that the employee attend outreach events to represent SCPL as a community literacy partner. The Literacy Outreach Coordinator will manage the Outreach team’s efforts through consistent communication and maintenance of an existing online calendar. This individual will provide assistance to library staff, as needed, at our early literacy programs at the Phyllis Bornt Branch Library and Literacy Center.

Qualifications

 Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills

 Experience working with a culturally diverse population

 Experience working with families living in poverty and the barriers they encounter

 Valid NYS driver’s license and a reliable vehicle

 Ability to contribute to an active public awareness/marketing campaign for literacy initiatives

 Experience in data collection, input and creation of reports

 Experience in working as a team and the ability to work independently when necessary

 Flexible schedule a must; may work mornings, afternoons, evenings and weekends

 Excellent time management skills

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree in the field of education, human resources, communications or related field.

An Associate’s Degree with experience in an appropriate field will be considered.

Hours:

20 hours per week, through June 30, 2017. Must be available Tuesdays from 2:30pm – 6:30 pm, Wednesdays from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm, Thursdays from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm, and Saturdays from 10:30 – 2:30 pm. Six additional hours each week are flexible and may vary by the week.

Rate of Pay: $22 per hour on a contractual basis. No benefits.
