Part-time Community Coordinator

Agricultural Stewardship Association (ASA) is a nonprofit land trust founded in 1990 by local farmers to protect land for continued agricultural and forestry uses. To date, we have assisted landowners with the conservation of 17,177 acres of farmland and forestland in Washington and Rensselaer counties. ASA seeks a self-motivated individual who has an interest in farming, passionate about land conservation and enjoys working with families, volunteers and farmers. This is a part-time position to help expand ASA’s outreach and relevance with the community and with farmers.

The Community Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating ASA’s outreach and educational programs for landowners, farmers and the general public. He/she will also assist with developing a volunteer program, which includes training, cultivating and coordinating volunteers. The Community Coordinator will incorporate the practice and promotion of ASA’s core values, which include respect, teamwork, accountability, problem solving, a “can do” attitude and professionalism. Principal responsibilities to include:

Community Programs and Events (60%)

• Working closely with ASA’s Communication and Outreach Manager, assists with organizing and setting up venues, communicating with farmers, landowners and partners, coordinating the logistics of the programs and events, promoting and implementing ASA’s community educational and outreach programs. Works with the staff to regularly assess goals and outcomes.

• Develops relationships with partner organizations and media to enhance and market programs. Engages others, such as photographers, food specialists, artists, and naturalists to assist with programs.

• Expands ASA’s Connecting Kids/Families with the Land program and partnerships. Helps develop new programs to connect new constituents with land conservation and the organization. Works with a wide age range of children, from preschool to high school. • Manages ASA’s gleaning program, including identifying local farms to participate, and coordinating with food pantries/food banks and volunteers.

• Assists with building stronger ties among partners and stakeholders that may lead to new ideas and opportunities for further rural and urban collaboration.

• Assists with the development and communication of messaging for programs and events and the continual updating, enhancement, and professionalism of ASA’s social media and related activities.

Volunteer Program (25%)

• Works with the ASA staff and board members to develop a volunteer program to support outreach and educational program success.

• Collaborates with board members and other volunteers to assess and identify how community members can get more involved in ASA as volunteers.

• Oversees volunteer recruitment, training, assignment, retention and recognition.

• Ensures sufficient volunteer coverage for all assignments.

• Promotes ASA’s goals, membership and activities and assists with tabling at venues.

Other (15%)

• Attends staff meetings and annual board/staff retreat. Attends regular meetings with supervisor for workplanning and evaluation of progress toward identified goals.

• Represents ASA within the community through events and programs.

• Assists with and attends ASA signature events (including Forever Farmland Supper and Landscapes for Landsake art exhibit).

• Prepares and assists with grant proposals when requested.

• Handles own correspondence and filing. Assists with daily office tasks and other assignments, as requested.

Qualifications:

Qualifications and Job Specifications:

• Minimum of three years of experience in nonprofit, education, event planning, or similar work; experience with teaching children and families, specifically in the outdoors, a plus;

• General knowledge of the following areas are preferred: land conservation, farming, gardening, wildlife ecology, photography, and food preparation (specifically with farm to table techniques);

• Strong communication, organization and time management skills;

• Knowledge and connections to Troy, Rensselaer County and the Greater Capital District region preferred;

• Proficient social media skills, including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram;

• Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft office suite; graphic design software a plus;

• Experience with databases; • Ability and willingness to take initiative, meet new people, and multi-task effectively and with humor.

• BA/BS from accredited college or university strongly preferred.

• CPR or first aid certifications, a plus.

• The ability to traverse over varied terrain for up to 3 miles; ability to work outdoors in adverse weather and ability to lift 40 lbs. Must be able to sit/stand for long periods of time.

Additional Information:

Reports to: Communications and Outreach Manager

Supervises: Volunteers, vendors and consultants as necessary.

Salary and Benefits: Competitive salary, part-time position includes mileage and holiday stipends

Transportation: Need to have own transportation, valid driver’s license and insurance for travel to office, meetings and events on a regular basis.

Location and Hours: ASA’s office is in Greenwich, New York. Work schedule will include some fixed weekly office hours and the need for flexibility for evening and weekend programs and events. Approximately 25-30 hours a week.
