Job Description

  • NexGen Power Systems is seeking a motivated engineer to lead the substrate materials and processing effort.  Key aspects of this position include; interfacing with GaN substrate vendors, tracking industry trends in GaN bulk crystal growth techniques, evaluation of substrate materials to be used for MOCVD growth of GaN and related compounds, and evaluation and development of GaN substrate reuse processes.
  • You will work closely with MOCVD growth and device processing teams to improve product perofrmance, yield, and cost.

Job Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive database of all GaN bulk materials and wafer suppliers
  • Formulate specifications and requirements for all substrate materials to be used in NexGen's manufacturing facility
  • Develop incoming materials tests and data tracking that insures all substrate materials meet required specifications
  • Evaluate ELO (epitaxial lift-off) processes for GaN for process compatibility
  • Work with the Process Integration team to formulate a process flow that is compatible with ELO
  • Work with the MOCVD growth team to determine substrate improvement roadmap
  • Contribute to failure analysis and yield improvement activities using structured problem solving techniques

Qualifications:

  • MS/PhD in Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Physics
  • 10+ years experience with compound semiconductor materials growth and processing.  GaN experience preferred.
  • Strong competence in materials characterization techniques and tools including sample preparation, FIB/SEM, X-ray, cross sectioning, emission microscopy, and material analysis EDX/FTIR/Auger/Raman spectroscopy
  • Deep understanding of mechanical and electrical properties of compound semiconductors, including defect formation, piezoelectric effects, stacking faults, etc.
  • Knowledge of ELO processes and handling of thin semiconductor films is desirable
  • Experience with structured problem solving methods (e.g. 8D, 5 why)
  • Experience with Design of Experiments, statistics for manufacturing engineering,
  • Experience with statistical analysis software such as JMP, Tableau
  • Team player
  • Good oral and written communications skills
