The Senior Network and Systems Analyst joins the Network Design and Engineering group in the division of Information Technology Services (ITS). S/he is responsible for the effective design, implementation and operation of the University at Albany network infrastructure spanning multiple campuses and locations in the Capital Region. The network serves nearly 25,000 University faculty, staff and students and is in a consistent pattern of growth and a constant cycle of replacement that enables and supports academic, research and administrative innovation.

Several major networking projects are in progress or on the horizon. As a senior member of the engineering team, s/he will be engaged in developing and advancing a major Wi-Fi growth initiative as well as a full refresh of the campus' distribution and access switching infrastructure. The group is taking on support for the University building control systems network and support for all PSTN gateways and analog conversion gateways in support of a new VoIP phone system. The Senior Network and Systems Analyst will also be integral to developing a strategy for introducing software defined networking to the data center network. In addition to the physical infrastructure elements, s/he will have responsibilities for maintaining and supporting a portfolio of network infrastructure systems, applications and scripts.

In this fast-paced work environment, ITS values a team-based approach to service delivery. All members of the team are expected to follow work, service, asset, and change management processes and contribute to their improvement. Constant communication with the team and collaborative design and delivery are key to successful service delivery and support of this scale.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Represent the network service as a subject matter expert and serve as a primary contributor for network architecture and project design phase activities
  • Directly participate in the implementation, operation, maintenance and growth of all network infrastructure at the University
  • Install, configure, maintain and support network infrastructure applications
  • Plan and build infrastructure that supports growth of IoT
  • Assist the Associate Director in perpetual planning for cyclic replacement of all equipment
  • Assist the Associate Director in budget planning by anticipating projects and providing cost estimates
  • Follow and adhere to ITS service management, asset management, and change management processes and protocols and established group procedures and standards
  • Contribute to the orderly and efficient operation of the team by maintaining neat work environments, well-organized store rooms, and methodically-arranged cable runs
  • Train, develop and mentor less senior staff
  • Develop and maintain network current state documentation
  • Develop and maintain familiarity with the customers of the Network infrastructure service, their demands on the service, and the service offerings available to and in use by each
  • Manage Network service projects, as needed
  • Engage vendors when developing project solutions and exploring new technologies
  • Lead by example in demonstrating professionalism, ethical behavior, and excellence in service


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized accrediting organization
  • Seven years of experience with network design and engineering including use of the following technologies: switching, routing, Wi-Fi, VoIP, and firewall standards and protocols including IP, IPv6, STP, OSPF, BGP, VxLAN, IPSec, 802.11ac, and SIP
  • Scripting experience (ie. Python, etc.) in a Linux/UNIX environment
  • Excellent problem solving and diagnostic skills across all layers of the OSI model
  • Experience with fiber optic and copper cabling standards
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Ability to work in a culturally diverse environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience operating a wireless access environment of at least 500 access points
  • Experience operating a network supporting a large-scale VoIP deployment
  • Experience with virtualized/container-based/cloud networking within VMware, OpenStack, or AWS.
  • Experience with advanced threat management implementations such as Palo Alto, Checkpoint, or Fortinet.
  • Experience working in a multi-vendor network infrastructure
  • Enterprise level networking certification from a major provider (ie. CCIE, JNCIE, etc.)
  • PMP certification
  • ITIL certification
