Senior Technical Writer/Trainer (R17-50)

The Professional Development Program (PDP) of the University at Albany's Rockefeller College seeks a service-minded individual who is committed to performing high-quality work to fill a Senior Technical Writer/Trainer position located in Albany, NY.

Description of Duties:

Works independently or with other members of the Child Support Training and Outreach Project (CSTOP) team in support of completing contract deliverables related to the development and delivery of child support training and specialized support activities in the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance's (OTDA) Child Support Services (CSS.)  Position responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Acquire knowledge and current information about NYS Child Support Services program operations and policy, and incorporate it into written materials for use in the Child Support Program Manual and curricula used to train and support NYS child support workers in execution of their job duties.
  • Facilitate focus groups, conduct site visits or work with subject matter experts to gather, organize and validate content/current information.
  • Write clear and detailed content documents for use in training programs and program support systems.
  • Collaborate with other project team members and complete work activities within a shared Windows-based computer environment.
  • Lead curriculum development or other work product teams/projects by preparing and writing detailed plans, assigning tasks, monitoring progress, and bringing project to completion.
  • Create and update portions of the on-line Child Support Program Manual.
  • Develop curricula; deliver training; create and deliver presentations.


Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's degree from a college or university accredited by a USDOE, or an internationally recognized accrediting organization.

  2. Minimum four years' professional experience preferably in design, development, and delivery of workplace training programs; technical writing; or case management at a social services agency.

  3. Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal and presentation skills.

  4. Strong writing, proofreading and editing skills with demonstrated proficiency with English language grammar/usage.

  5. Experience and comfort with delivering training.

  6. Experience designing and writing training/curricular materials; operational, procedural, technical or reference manuals; user guides or software documentation; or, government or policy documents.

  7. Strong computer skills; proficient working with computers in Windows environment and Microsoft Office products.

  8. Experience with, knowledge of or ability to learn easily and use effectively HTML, Adobe design tools, RoboHelp, Camtasia, or other computer tools including presentation tools, and web-based training or meeting delivery tools such as GoToMeeting/Webinar.

  9. Possesses problem-solving, analytical and project management skills.

  10. Able to manage time effectively and deal with multiple priorities.

  11. Possesses strong team and customer orientation.

  12. Able to assume leadership role.

  13. Applicants must address in their applications their ability to work with culturally diverse populations.

  14. Willing and able to travel throughout NYS to areas that may not be served by public transportation to conduct work activities.

  15. Able to lift and transport training materials or equipment (laptops, projectors) up to 40 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Master's degree from a college or university accredited by a USDOE, or an internationally recognized accrediting organization.
  2. Knowledge of instructional design process and adult learning principles.
  3. Experience with NYS child support or other social services programs, and automated case management and accounting systems.
  4. Experience applying usability principles and elements of graphic design in an electronic environment as well as knowledge of, experience with or coursework in web technologies, computer programming, systems analysis, business processes, accounting or financial systems, adult learning theory and instructional design process.
  5. Willing to learn and grow with needs of the project and PDP.

Salary Range:  Mid to High $50s
