Special Assistant for Housing and Community Development

The Special Assistant for Housing and Community Development will work collaboratively across the Office to develop innovative pilot programs, identify enforcement campaigns, and promote public policy initiatives that relate to affordable housing, community preservation, mortgage servicing and blight remediation across New York State. This position will report to the Chief Deputy Attorney General.

Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

  • Developing and implementing housing and community development programs;
  • Working collaboratively across bureaus to generate and manage cases related to housing and tenant harassment, including the review and escalation of tenant and homeowner complaints received by the office.
  • Participating in the development and implementation of housing related legislation and policy;
  • Working with municipal and county partners, analyzing existing practices to isolate areas ripe for improvement, particularly in the areas of affordable housing, foreclosure prevention, community rebuilding and civic innovation;
  • Researching and trend tracking of cutting edge, innovative housing and community revitalization initiatives in NY and around the country;
  • Identifying opportunities for replication of housing and community development pilot programs in partner communities across NY State;
  • Assisting in the creation and design of OAG funding initiatives and consumer relief programs that address housing and community revitalization issues;
  • Working with external stakeholders to leverage resources (including foundations, the technology sector, banks, and private sector partners);
  • Assisting with the management, oversight, and technical support of existing OAG housing and community development funding programs and identify program improvements that will enhance efficacy and impact; and
  • Building relationships with local and state government agencies in order to identify opportunities for collaboration and to ensure OAG housing and community revitalization programs are additive to existing state led efforts.

Qualifications:

We are seeking an innovative, entrepreneurial individual to lead the OAG’s housing and community development efforts.  Applicants should have some or all of the following qualifications, expertise and skill sets:

  • Bachelor’s degree combined with at least five (5) years of professional experience related to housing and community development;
  • A graduate degree in a relevant field preferred but not required;
  • An understanding of single and multifamily housing, foreclosure prevention, and community revitalization issues, especially New York State’s politics and policies;
  • Proven record of program development and management for complex, interdisciplinary projects involving multiple stakeholders;
  • Knowledge of State and Federal housing and community development policies and programs including financing mechanisms;
  • Familiarity with the latest trends in civic engagement and innovation;
  • Experience in the social impact space, specifically managing community development projects or programs on behalf of a government agency or foundation;
  • Knowledge of and relationships with housing and community development stakeholders in New York, preferably in multiple regions across the state; and
  • Experience in using technology and innovation to address social challenges.
