Position Summary:

Lead the direction of the sustainability program for Virginia Tech Dining Services and Housing & Residential Life. Program development will encompass evaluating any current practices having an environmental impact; researching and evaluating options to reduce that impact including feasibility; cost and overall campus impact; and leading the implementation of new programs and practices. Provide guidance and support for staff on sustainability programs while taking into account the needs of a foodservice operation. Components of the program to include (but not limited to):
• Strategic planning for sustainability programming for Dining Services and Housing & Residential Life.
• Increase sourcing of local and sustainable foods campus-wide and at The Farms & Fields Project the signature sustainable dining venue in our portfolio.
• Manage and expand composting and waste tracking, reduction, and diversion programs.

Represent Dining Services and Housing & Residential Life on campus and within the community to facilitate strong partnerships which further departmental sustainability program goals.


Required Qualifications:

Knowledge of environmental management policies, issues, initiatives, and sustainability practices, particularly with regard to sustainable food systems and related waste management. Knowledge of higher education dining services issues and operations. Bachelor’s degree and experience in a sustainability advocacy field. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral. Ability to work with diverse groups and build partnerships. Strong analytical, technical, and planning skills. Ability to work independently and as a team leader and member. Teamwork and diplomacy skills a must. Ability to develop new projects and institutionalize new sustainability efforts within an academic setting. Comprehensive knowledge of Microsoft Office including PowerPoint, Excel, Project Management, SharePoint and Outlook. Experience with actively managing social media for outreach purposes.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with dining services sustainable food systems in higher education. B.S. or M.S in related sustainability, environmental, Civic Agriculture or other comparable field. Experience with sustainability initiatives in university housing. Experience with the LEED certification process. Experience with contract negotiations. Experience in grant, award and professional writing. Exceptional public speaking and communications skills.
Working knowledge of AASHE STARS and other accreditation programs.
