Union College invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of Academic Departments and Programs (DADP). Founded in 1795 and located on a beautiful, 130-acre campus in Schenectady, NY, Union is a highly selective liberal arts college integrating programs in the arts, humanities, social, natural and computational sciences and engineering in new and exciting ways. The successful candidate will guide the development of a faculty of vibrant teacher-scholars and a curriculum that supports the College’s educational mission: to provide students with the analytic and reflective abilities needed to become engaged, innovative, and ethical contributors to an increasingly diverse, global, and technologically complex society.
The DADP is a key member of the College’s academic leadership team, reporting to the Vice President for Academic Affairs/Dean of the Faculty (VPAA/DoF). The academic deans meet regularly with the VPAA/DoF to discuss and act on policy, budgetary, and other administrative matters affecting academic programs. The DADP serves on committees related to faculty tenure, promotion, reappointment and review; course and program development; and the construction and renovation of academic facilities. In addition, the DADP advises and assists the VPAA/DoF, as needed.
Reporting to the DADP are 21 academic department chairs and 14 interdisciplinary program directors, two faculty directors (Director of Faculty Development, Director of Interdisciplinary Programs), one staff program director (Director of the Leadership in Medicine Program), and two administrative assistants. The DADP and the VPAA/DoF work together closely to develop, advance, and implement special academic programs in support of the College’s strategic goals.
The DADP has primary responsibility for appointing and working with academic department chairs and interdisciplinary program directors to support continued academic excellence at the College. The DADP is responsible for faculty development, support of faculty research and teaching, overseeing faculty hiring, participating in faculty reviews, designing and conducting faculty orientation and mentoring programs, and administering internal research grants and fellowships. The DADP works closely with the Dean of Diversity and Inclusion (Chief Diversity Officer) to promote inclusiveness and diversity in the faculty and the faculty hiring process. The DADP plays a critical role in curriculum support and development by ensuring that departments and programs have appropriate staffing, planning and organizing external reviews of departments and programs, reviewing proposals for new and modified courses and programs, and administering internal and external grants for curricular development and innovation. The DADP works closely with the Director of Assessment on student learning assessment in academic departments and programs, and serves as the institutional liaison for the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).
Candidates for the position of DADP must have a Ph.D. or the equivalent terminal degree in their field, credentials and achievements satisfying Union College’s criteria for tenure and appointment at the full professor level and experience (at least 3 years preferred) chairing an academic department or directing an academic program. They should also demonstrate excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills and be able to interact productively with faculty, staff, administrators, students, and alumni, and work across responsibility centers in support of the College’s academic programs. Additional experience in faculty-driven academic governance, policymaking, or leadership positions that have afforded the candidate an institution-wide perspective is preferred, as is experience in the conduct of faculty searches, the management of significant budgets and the design of general education programs. Experience supervising faculty and staff in a diverse multicultural and multidisciplinary setting, and familiarity with highly selective, predominantly undergraduate institutions also would be assets to the successful candidate.
