Why did you choose Union?
For me, the college search process was no small feat. I took it very seriously (and I most definitely drove my parents crazy in the process). I remember going from school to school in search of very specific things – such as rigorous academics, a plethora of extracurricular activities and the opportunity to participate in athletics at the Division III level. But just as I was about to make my decision, the pandemic hit. Since this happened at the peak of my senior year, I was unable to take an additional tour of the schools that I applied to. In my panicked state, I reached out to a series of colleges and asked them questions, so that I could come to a decision. Union was notably the first college that got back to me, and the administration answered my many questions in a thorough and insightful way. It immediately put me at ease. I realized how responsive the Union community truly was, and I felt valued as an individual. It was through these gracious efforts, from both the students and staff alike, that I felt eager and ready to attend such a welcoming and dynamic community of people.
How do you describe Union to friends and family?
Union is a place where you are encouraged to be the best version yourself. Its small class sizes promote a sense of community and belonging, where students are granted the opportunity to ask questions and engage thoughtfully with the material. In these smaller educational settings, students can also build lasting relationships with their professors. It is through this specialized attention that students will be able to find a path that is specific to them and their talents and desires.
Outside of the classroom, there are many opportunities to get involved on campus. For example, there are academic clubs, community service organizations, and club sports, among many others! There is something for everyone, and the opportunities to be involved prove endless. Overall, Union is a place where you are truly valued as a student, person, and friend. You are encouraged to leave a lasting impression on not only the campus community, but the world at large.
What has been your favorite class assignment at Union?
I had a great affinity for each of my assignments in my “Making Meaningful Writing” course. In this class, we were given prompts that encouraged us to explore our own personal experiences, trajectories and goals. I adored having this creative outlet, especially in an academic setting.
What is your favorite place off-campus in Schenectady?
I love to go out to eat. I come from an Italian family, so food is always a staple of our interactions. My favorite place in Schenectady is More Perreca's; the tomato pie is delicious!
