***A message from Angela Stefanatos, Health Center Director, Wicker Wellness Center, October 2014:

Although the risk to Union College community is very low, the Wellness Center continues to monitor the Ebola outbreak in West Africa and the recent cases in the United States. The virus is transmitted to individuals who have been in direct contact with the blood or bodily fluids of an infected patient or objects that have been in contact with infected secretions. It cannot be transmitted through the air, food or water.

We are closely following recommendations made by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) as well as the American College Health Association. The CDC has issued a series of guidelines concerning incoming students, faculty or staff who have recently traveled to Sierra Leone, Guinea, Liberia and Nigeria. These guidelines can be found on the CDC’s website.

The CDC recommends against non-essential travel, including educational-related travel, to Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia. International travelers are also advised to take enhanced precautions if planning on visiting Nigeria.

At this time, we are not aware of any students traveling to or from the affected countries. We also do not believe that the current cases in Texas increase the risk to the Union community. However, students, faculty and staff who may have been in an affected area within the past 21 days should contact the Wellness Center.

Staff members from Union’s safety, security and health and wellness offices are collaborating with Schenectady County's Emergency Management Team to ensure that our response measures are in line with regional efforts.

Questions about Ebola can be directed to the Union College Wellness Center at 518-388-6120.
